Hello Alientrap : Introducing a New Nexuiz Public Server

Discuss anything to do with Nexuiz here.

  • Hi all,

Just thought I would register as I have just discovered Nexuis and think it's a great game.
At last I won't have to switch to bootcamp XP when I want an FPS fix : though judging by my performance on various servers so far, I have alot of practice to do.

I run a gaming community which has just been reborn as http://www.playportal.net. After finding Nexuis, I decided to run a server for it - Playportal.net Nexuis Server in the in game browser. It's UK based and has a low ping / fast 100mb unrestricted connection on a dedi box.

I've started to plug the game at Playportal - and that's my other reason for saying Hi here - the more of you that sign up at Playportal and wax lyrical about this amazingly accomplished open source development, the more likely we are to get the server regularly busy with our members and the more likely it is to remain a permanent server.

We started as a creative gamers community and have many mappers amongst us. I enjoy Sound Engineering, plus we have several coders / developers who may, if they get the bug for your superb project, want to get involved.

So. Hi :) ....and hope to see some of you soon in game. Pop along to Playportal and big up the game and it's community 8)

    All the best

    Colt

  • Hi and welcome!

Might be a server, where both the USA and the EU players could play. Thanks for invitation.

  • Hi and welcome to Nexuiz! <-- did you notice the "z"?

    Edit: darn, too late! :?

sounds like an interesting idea. For valuable tips on gameplay see

although the newer weapons (HLAC, Tag/Seeker, Portal Gun, Camping rifle, Hook) are not yet represented there.

    Enjoy!
<Community>: Why was the name "Nexuiz" licensed to IllFonic in a way that allows IllFonic to use the name without any suffix or subtitle for a commercial console game?

And why would they need to be there? :) After all there is a reason this version is STILL IN DEVELOPMENT.. its nice to have SOME test servers from people that understand the system and are close to the developers to be able to find bugs and report them, maybe even fix them. But games need to have versions/releases to make sure stuff is most compatible, and also to make sure the players NOTICE when a new version is out and NOT to confuse them about releases. Not to say there are a few extra things to be done for test servers to make sure 2.4.2 players can enjoy them..

So all in all i think there are already MORE then enough test servers online and would appreciate if Colt Seavers just hosts a 2.4.2 server till the next release is done.

    Welcome by the way :)

PS the Link by Halogene is basicly exactly the same as the file Nexuiz/Docs/basics.html ..

  • I always tend to forget that 2.4.2 is basically the current release.

To me, the SVN version looks (and sounds) (and feels) so much better than the 2.4.2 already, that the worst thing I have to say about it is that I hate that darn message at the bottom right. I believe the SVN version has already acquired a stableness where it has a lot fewer bugs than 90% of the commercial computer games at the date of their official release.

Why are the Nexuiz developers so darn perfectionist?!

I guess, because they rock, that's why :)

Watch the console or read the default settings file, it mentions how to turn that off.. and you find hints regarding this problem in some threads about the beta versions for 2.4 and 2.4.2. The first two is easier though
That line was added to make sure people really understand what they get when using one of the build scripts from the forum..

Well some sounds are still missing, but maybe now that Tenshihan seems to be getting better that might soon be done. And some people are still doing replacements for some gun models, ammo.. maps.. but i'd say its quite well otherwise :)

/me pushes the thread back on its trails

*cough* so I hope many players sign up there at Playportal to promote this game and its community!

A server where I will have low ping!

Heres a quick list of ctf maps you may want to have off the top of my head:

    hydronexb7
    symdusty_v2r1
    mentalspace
    greatwall_reloaded3
    dance
    resevoir_r4
    moonstone
    facing_worlds_nex2

You should be able to find all of them here:
    http://maps.nexuizninjaz.com/
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

  • Most of these are bad CTF map examples. However, bad maps make server more popular. So it's your choice.

FIne greatwall_revisited then. You know they are all extremely popular maps they are going to end up on it one way or another. The noobs demand it! :P

  • Don't forget to mention ctctf6_nex_r2 map too! (it can be found at maps.nexuizninjaz.com) That's a must-have map, looks cool, and the buildup and size is for very intense actions :P (the terrain at mortar still should be fixed though :P) Do consider it!

  • great stuff - cheers for the replies fellas. Just had a good few hours of DM then CTF. We're going to get on the case and upload recommended maps.

Whilst it's most of our communities first day on the game, it's received a really great response! Especially from those whose OS of choice is not Windows - but also from the windows players.

We increased the server to 24 slots. It's called Playportal.net ......etc.

With regards to map priorities.....we've alot of mappers, and an affiliation with TF2maps.net, so we appreciate a well made map. Our priority is not filling a server so much as making sure friendly peeps get to play the maps they think have real merit. We'll get some admin sorted soon and hopefully tweak everything so it runs nicely.

oh, and sorry about the spelling, me brains gone :P
    Cheers again,

    Colt

  • I've stuffed the server with the official 30 map map pack along with those recommended by Sepelio. I havent adjusted a map cycle yet....though it is set to CTF so i'm wondering if maybe it will know which maps are ctf and include them in the votes.

we've tweaked the config a little - including optimising the FPS / tickrate of the server.

I'm not sure if 24 slots is a little large - we're after the best experience of the game, rather than a total frag fest (when playing with small numbers i notice you need to think alot more, which i like).

If you haven't already, go add to the article i've posted and give it a DIGG :) http://www.playportal.net/node/840

All the best and hope to catch you in game soon,

  • Most CTF maps aren't designed to support that many players. I was doing 22 player slots and it felt like anything above an 8v8 was a total mess (with the exception of very few maps). If you do decide to put your player slots that hi, you should use the g_maxplayers cvar which allows your to set # of players that can PLAY. So, maxplayers 22 with g_maxplayers 16 would have 6 people spectating.

DM, LMS, DOM, Minsta and Keyhunt you might be able to get away with more... but not by many ^_^

2.4.2 Searchable cvar list, svn/2.5 has one built in but there is also a web one here for svn / Nexuiz 2.5 when you decide to upgrade.

  • Don't change sys_ticrate cause it affects default physics. Higher ticrate -> higher jumps.

  • Ok. Server reduced to 16 slots for now.

The maps are all working and we've used the rotation k0jak kindly recommended, with the includsion of Sepelios.

Our reasonning is that we don't know any of the maps at all yet - so want a wide-ish choice to see what floats our boat.

Love Dance btw - although that may just be cos i've been playing it alot : but it runs at 300+ fps on my system, which is unheard of for an fps!
