  • I have a ssh accessable IRC server and a nexuiz channel on there connected to my nexuiz server. It will relay anything you say on the channel #nexuiz (not just stuff addressed to it).

To access the server you can:
SSH to port 20 of cat2.dynu.ca as guest (password is guest):

    ssh -p 20 guest@cat2.dynu.ca

Or it can also be accessed through tor if you have socat installed on your machine by executing the following command:

    socat TCP4-LISTEN:22220,fork SOCKS4A:localhost:udomkphkit27zfwo.onion:20,socksport=9050 & ssh -p 22220 guest@127.0.0.1;

Once you're in you can /j #nexuiz or any other chatroom.

    https://cat2.optus.nu/cat2/ssh2irc.html

Shell users of Cat2 can just forward localhost 9999 and connect with a regular irc client

Everything other than stuff talked on #nexuiz is encrypted.
Since the nexuiz server isn't encrypted and the bot outputs to it, things in there might not be encrypted if non-local users are playing on it.

Tell me what you think :D
The middle ware client is something bobelerto made and I extended alot (its' GPLd: https://cat2.optus.nu/cat2/x-motif.pl )

  • why SSH?

sounds a bit too *nerdy* for me ;)
why not relay to the same open IRC servers as the DCC servers.

  • SSH allows you to have private conversations in private (or any other channel that is not linked to an unencrypted game server) channel. IRC is just all plain text all the time.

Think of it this way. With IRC your conversation can be intercepted and spyed on so there are things you aught not discuss in it. With SSHdIRC you don't have that problem so much :).

  • think of it that way: what do you have to say on a Nexuiz-orientated channel that really requires absolute secrecy? Who are the ones that would (if able) try to intercept YOUR conversation? what would you honestly talk about?

anyway, besides overenthusiastic privacy protection, i just think this SSH-IRC lays the entry-barrier a bit too high..

  • Especially given that SSL-IRC provides the same security, but is much simpler to set up for an user, and works with many existing IRC clients.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Almost ever *nix distro comes with an ssh client, but they may not come with a irc client. Also I get threatened with imprisonment every few weeks or months for what I type publically. I've found it easy, if I want to talk to a person securely, to just tell them to connect to that SSH gateway, then ask them a few questions only the person is likely to know (not fully secure, but what can I do?) and then type.

Another benefit is that only localhost users (shell users) get to connect directly to the irc server.
Is there a BNC program that supports (and can be set to require) SSL and can be set to only allow access to cerain channels (like #ssl and #nexuiz)? I'd like a middle-man between the irc server and the internet like I have with the ssh middleware client.

Also maybe channels created by ssl users could be appended with .ssl
