Do i have to use the console to turn them off, or am I too blind to find the option switch in the menu?

But the menu switch has been removed for a reason: all weapon effects are particles now, so if you switch them off, you will hardly notice a rocket explosion. But particles don't "cost" much (even a Geforce 2 MX is capable of redering them), so it's not worth the performance gain imho.

There should be an option in Options/Effects but the variables are cl_particles*. I would however not turn them all off as most effects are gone then.

Those should turn it down to an very acceptable level.. among other settings its also in the low.cfg iirc. (exec low.cfg;vid_restart)

The particles cost me a drop from 90 to 45 FPS...

But I'll try to tweak it in more detail as esteel suggested.. I'll give feedback
