  • Greetings,

I'm trying to locate all the licensing/copyright restrictions on what one can do with Nexuiz for possibly distributing it on a CD. So far I've found the GPL license and I understand that fully (I'm a opensource advocate).

However, many projects have additional copyrights/trademarks placed on certain things, such as textures, maps, logos etc.

Could I get a official response (from someone who is able to represent alien trap) on any restrictions with the the game, please?

  • No, there are no other restrictions on any content. All the content in Nexuiz is licensed under the GPL version 2, as far as it applies (possibly some paragraphs of the GPL, especially the source code requirement, are void when applied to "sourceless" content like recorded sound samples, or textures).

Which by the way is why it is so hard to get people to contribute to Nexuiz.

Note that the license is "GPL version 2" and not "GPL version 2 or later".
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Great! that's helped clarify it.

I have another question about the logos included in the game, is it alright to include the logos printed on the disc/packaging?

ie: Sticking the Nexuiz logo on it with a "developed by <alien trap logo>" under it, modifying it so it goes on the packaging/disc correctly?

edit: I know it's a bit redundant to keep asking the same thing over and over, just would rather be sure before committing work on anything.

It does seem that, in the wider world, many people are happy to "contribute" to an opensource project and reap the glory... without contributing anything opensource :P. Basically such non-contributions are legal trojan horses and (ofcourse) do not further opensource/freesoftware in any way.

Fortunatly some people do contribute to nexuiz, and from that base pretty much ANY texture that is needed can now be created (especially now with the addition of the egyptian texture set). (I've never really found any texture that I wanted that I couldn't make by using existing nexuiz GPLd (or other OSI plus FSF approved licnese) textures as a base).
