  • aaaalright, the 3rd episode has just been released.

    Teaser:
The third episode of Nexuiz In-Depth will continue in the spirit of it's predecessor, covering other means of tweaking your beloved game to your liking.
Once again guiding the Nexuiz newcomer through the vast configuration possibilities this podcast will explain the newly introduced “advanced settings” menu in great detail.

    After this episode you will
    • recognize variables which are saved automaticly on shutdown
    • know the difference between engine and game variables
    • be able to use the search filter the right way

    Tune in!

Watch at Nexuiz In-Depth YouTube channel

    2 important things:
    1. The series needs your help, otherwise after episode 9 it will end (I can't produce more episodes right now, and won't be able to in the near future either). Have a look at the Creating new episodes wiki article to find out more about the work of a host when creating episodes. If you think you can do it, got time and motivation, please contact me!
    2. To make the episodes more popular, please advertise the youtube channel URL on public servers, or tell your mates about it. Having 125 views in one week (as of now, episode 2) is not really satisfying for me :(

    Cheers!

  • Why dont you add these videos on the nexuiz mainpage? I guess they are great tutorials for all new players and also for players who are longer in the game. I see new stuff I didnt use before, which is nice. Also it is more entertaining to see a video then reading/searching all tutorials in the forum! They could be linked in the "info" or "FAQ" field i.e. (edit, yes I have seen them in the "news" field, but it wouldnt be wrong to have the link permanent on the mainsite, or not?)

  • yeah probably. but the question is where to put it exactly.

Funny thing is that the first episode is directly linked on the page, and I have also a lot more "views" of that episode than of any other episode. I think people are too dumb to realize that that was only the introduction episode and that in my channel there are many more episodes. Going to place a comment in the intro movie right at the beginning now to help that.

What would be good if a link could be put on the "links" page first of all. But on the upper bar theres not gonna be any space left.

  • U can put inside the video at the end of each episode (like 5-10 seconds before the video ends) a link to the next epidode. Or create a youtube playlist. Or both ;P

  • Btw, do you think I should publish the 2 remaining episodes right away? I produced them over a month ago, and since the series will die anyway, there is not so much point in publishing them weekly?

Or is this schedule still appreciated?

  • I always watch your videos, and I've already learned a lot from them, thank you.
I'd happily do videos about mapping, but I don't know where to start, WHEN to do it, and are there any tools for linux to make these? I have a virtual XP, if that's ok.
I'd stick to the weekly release shedule.

Indeed, the production values are high enough for this to have official support. It surprised me when I first saw the videos, because it's a far cry from the usual gaming-enthusiast fare. On the other hand, the episodes are too slow-paced and don't deliver content-wise. I'm very sorry to say, but I'm not even watching the latest ones. The promise from the introductory video about keeping them shorter than five minutes has not been kept, and things like customizing my scoreboard or the intricacies of configuration file paths are not relevant to me. If the format was different, I could at least skim through the information, but in a video, it's stacked in time. In fact, I feel that choosing the video format has been an end in itself. Textual tutorials would have been less impressive but much more useful.

  • I agree that putting the same kind of content into a text-made tutorial makes actually more sense. I chose to do a video podcast for reasons such as "want to try it out" (and do my own podcast) and videos usually attract people more in the nowadays multimedia-focused world of internet.

The problem of the podcast is that quite a bit of basic knowledge is needed to be able to fully utilize the hidden nexuiz features. Explaining these took the first 4 episodes or so, and admitted, they are sort of boring to watch (I even admit that in one of the episodes).

I cannot judge whether the content gets to the mind of the viewer, I actually think it kind of does (as opposed to your opinion), and for the ones who need to quickly get information they can read the wiki which summarizes the info. However, since there is too little feedback about the wiki (0 persons saying thanks for that) dIM, who is responsible for its content, stopped working for it.

About the speed of the episodes being slow ... well, dunno what I am supposed to improve there. It's certainly a lot better than a lot of the real-life professors presentation slides I've seen during my studies. And that the episodes are too long .. well yeah they are, but that comes from little knowledge from my side how to cut down content to the most important aspects, and I still think that the things I say do matter and I actively reviewed my transscripts for things to leave out before recording the audio ... so, no idea what to say here ;)

However, in the end it's just another failed project from my side, and I learn that I shall not ever initiate projects again (for which I don't get paid), at least not for Nexuiz, that involve all the hard work being on my side, and then expecting that any1 else would like to contribute. Because no1 here does. And that was the same with the planetnexuiz.com project (some of you readers may know) as well - lots of work, little appreciation. It died, just as this podcast will die.

Next thursday I'll release the last episode, no. 9, archive the project on backup drives, and what I have left is a youtube show which I can show to my friends and some funny memories from producing it.

  • A long time nothing happened. But as I am having some free time (holidays!) I decided to create a few more episodes.

Check out the newest episode no 10 on YouTube!

It is a basic movement tutorial that covers circle jumping only. The other aspect of Nexuiz movement (apart from bunnyhopping which was also explained), ramp jumps, will be covered in the episode after that. These are the movies you should show to your friends that are new to the game! ;)

Enjoy, put comments on the channel :P

And btw, this time I didn't write up a script and all that as I was too lazy. I was just doing it out of the blue.

  • It's interesting, this final movement episode is where the "real content" began, because I think for most newbies they know the basics of First Person Shooters. But in the movement tutorial you really broke down exactly how to do the jumps, something I've never seen before. Up until then it was a lot of technical prep stuff, and nothing about the actual gameplay/tactics/skills!

So, I encourage you to make more gameplay videos, I think that'll draw a lot more attention.

But overall, very impressive! Just got to say that again.

  • I have to add many thanks from my side too, I never quite got the hang of moving effectively. This tutorial was really helpful for me. And I am playing Nexuiz for I think two years or so already, so I wouldn't consider myself being a noob (how other players see me may be a different story again, though).
<Community>: Why was the name "Nexuiz" licensed to IllFonic in a way that allows IllFonic to use the name without any suffix or subtitle for a commercial console game?

  • Great stuff!! I will pay more attention to ramps now. I've used them occasionally but I really overlooked a lot of nice jumps, especially several of the ones you pointed out.

I'm wondering...is there a trick to jumping up stairs?

Oh, and green marine, I know you'd love for someone else to do some episodes, but I think you do such a good job it would be hard to replicate! Your explainations, breakdown are very accessible and paced well. Not to mention you have done an outstanding job with your production values (intro/editing/sound quality/video quality). It's probably better to keep it consistently high class and well done then to bring someone else on.

I think I saw a comment saying 10 minutes was too long...but I don't think so. Better done well in more time than rushed. :D

So...I think you should just put up new episodes at your leisure. No need to keep to a timetable IMHO. When you're finally done (months, even years  ), the community will have the best video primer on a first person shooter BAR NONE.

Oh, and don't worry about the relatively low view count (although I noticed some of the older videos have a good couple thousand views now), over time I am quite sure they will become viral among any and all nexuiz players. Not to mention repeat views!

Keep it up! You rock! 8)

Thanks for the kudos again. There is not really a trick to it. I would recommend that instead of repeatedly pressing the jump key to just hold the jump key pressed while going up the stairs. There are stairs where you usually never run into problems (as in: getting stuck), such as the one on soylent, and others where you often run into problems, such as the ones on stormkeep2.
