How to toggle difficulty level in nexuiz?

  • Hello.
I love the open source game nexuiz. It's great - especially the new maps. But the level of the bots is heavy. Is there someone who can tell me how to set the level?
In openarena there are some different difficulty levels. In nexuiz I miss this. For example the maps with low gravity are a real hugger. The bots are shooting that precise and fast, I sometimes get fragged even when I respawn and before I can move somewhere.

  • When you create a game from the menu, there is a slider that controls the bot skill.

Alternately, you can manipulate the variables that control bot behaviour directly from the console.

  • Hi.
Sorry, I forgot to write: I mean solo player games (instant action for example).
The variables about the bot skill ... I found no doku - what do the numbers mean
(a lower number a lesser skilled bot or otherwise)?

  • I'm not sure if you can change it in Instant Action , probably with some cmds in the console.
In the Campaign you can't change the skill :) but you can create your own game with bots.
Multiplayer -> Create - There you can pick the map, toggle time-/fraglimit etc.
and theres the slider where you can choose the bot skill like Taiyo said.

  • That's bad.

I wanted to change it in the campaign. Why isn't there an option in nexuiz for doing that like any other FPS has?

  • Open the console and type the level of bot skill you want (numbers between 1-10), for example:

    Code: Select all
    skill 10

Well, basically Nexuiz is designed for playing online with human opponents. The "campaign" is just for getting a basic feel for the game. The real action and the most fun will take place online. If bunnyhopping and laser jumping is new to you, I'd strongly suggest to just join some server and spectate. You learn a LOT from spectating skilled players and getting the hang of the movement tricks in Nexuiz is very much fun indeed!

    Welcome to the forum, btw!

Like many single player games, it starts easy and becomes harder. The idea being that you must improve your skills in order to progress in the campaign.

  • But some of the scenarios, like that, where you are in a low gravity area with one singleshot weapon (sniper), is nearly impossible. In the time, I recognize an enemy, I am already shot and when I repawn, I get immediatelly shot again!

  • Yes, that's what I mean.

(In Nexuiz 5, the weapon is looking different, but the area is nearly exactly the same.)

The problem is not only that the computer-enemies (bots) aim and shot that fast. They got too much frags in a time, in which I can't get more frags. So it seems impossible for me to win this scenario. The next prob. is the aiming - the bots have massive advantages and seem never to fail when shoot - I do (of course) - especially when "flying" around. And when I try to shoot faster to make some "chance hits", I get out of ammo and die (what a nonsense to die when outta ammo).

  • I recently played the 2.5 campaign and the Silvercity low gravity minsta and the race level were definitely the hardest for me. I can see how these could be campaign stoppers for beginning Nexuiz players.

Maybe they should be put at the end of the campaign or the difficulty could be slightly decreased. In all fairness we've had a few people come on here now with this same issue.

  • Isn't it possible to edit one of the config files, so as to skip levels in the campaign?
edit: in windows, it's the campaign.cfg file, found in the data folder (inside the subfolder, also called data). Mine currently reads "set g_campaignNexuiz25_index 6" so I'd guess that increasing the 6 to a 7 would skip level 6 for me.
I got hung up on the low-gravity minsta level, too, but took this as a sign of which game type to avoid playing on-line!

wut these bots fail of course :)
You have to pick up ammo!! (Nex , or cells).
I dunno if i played this level already - i check later ;)
edit: k i just played and don't know.. its easy for me :D i died 3 times. you have to pickup the items and you have to move always..

  • hmm its strange to see quite many people complaining about the difficulity of that silvercity scenario... maybe would worth to lower the bot difficulity or even better, give more nex ammo :P

nightwing: its not hard to complete that scenario if you fly up to one of the four higher platform belting around the map, just zoom (i think its the middle mouse button by default, dont remember, you can set it up in the menu, ALT key is quite good for it for example) and start sniping the bots, they wont be too hard targets.
