Configuration question plus question for devs

  • I usually play with all settings on max, but with r_showsurfaces 3 and r_showtris 1. It makes the game look awesome, but makes it impossible to play team based games. I usually play DM, but it would be nice to be able to use these settings with CTF and TDM too.

    First question;
    r_showtris isn't saved to config.cfg, and I tried just adding it to the file, just to see if it would read it anyway, but it didn't. Is there a way to save that setting as "1"? It's not that hard to just set it every time you start the game, I know, but if it's possible, I'd like to save it.

    Second question;
    The showtris option makes all entities (If that's the right word) such as powerups, weapons and players green (I.e, the edges that are lighted up are green). This makes it impossible to see the difference from an enemy to a friend in team based modes; I don't know how much work it would give you, devs, but can you change it, so the enemies "outlines" are red instead? As said, I don't know how much work that is, and I don't think a lot of people would care about that change, but if it's not hard it would make my day!

    Thanks in advance.

    Save this setting on a new file named autoexec.cfg, in the same folder where y our config.cfg is. That should solve it.

  • r_showtris 1 doesn't sound like fair play to me. For competitive play I really don't think you should be playing with it.

    So it looks a bit wrong? That's because it is intended for development, not for cheating. Turn it off please.

  • Well it's not as though it makes anything easier, I just think it makes the game look a lot better. And anyhow it's a setting, anyone can turn it on if they feel that I "cheat". (Plus I mostly play against bots, simply because when I play there's usually just one DM server with a reasonable ping, which loops boring maps).

    Also, thanks for the helpful reply!

    It highlights all players with a fluorescent green wireframe and you don't think it makes things easier? It makes invisible players visible, thus ruining the point of invisibility.

    Well then how about everyone plays with aimbots too? No. Everyone needs to play within the spirit of the rules so please do not play with r_showtris on when playing publicly. What you do with bots is up to you.

  • Well, I honestly didn't know you could be invisible, I've never seen that; not even with the normal settings.

    Also, it is a setting, not a third party program. If an aimbot was included with the game, then no, I don't think anyone should whine about it, when they can use it themselves if they feel that things are imbalanced.

    Anyhow, since you people seem to think otherwise, perhaps the devs could make something similiar to the r_showtris option, but makes it less, as you put it, 'unfair'. Just something that would replicate the look of it, but perhaps make these invisible players invisible even with the option on. See what I mean? I honestly just like the look of it, it's so clean, lacking a better word for describing it.

    Also, to respond to you, Ed, making players green does not, to me, matter. I can easily spot other players even in dark maps. As said, I did not know about an invisibility power up, but that could possibly be fixed by devs. Anyway, you mention rules. Where are these rules? I've never seen any rules.

    Perhaps the setting could be turned into a mutator, or the devs could make another setting that is less 'unfair'?

    (Do note that I am not here to start an angry discussion, so I hope we can peacefully continue this debate)

    EDIT: Or not. That's cool too.
