I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to the Nexuiz community for adhering to pure GPL licensing.

My company sells a variety of Free Software applications, as well as develops a GNU/Linux distro (Nexradix -- http://www.nexradix.com). As such, I always make note of the licensing of the software I use.

As far as I've found, Nexuiz is the ONLY 100% Free Software first person shooter for GNU/Linux. Every other game in the genre that I've found without exception, uses non-free art, textures, or maps.

Now I'm not completely convinced that non-free textures or art is even legally distribuable under the GPL -- while they aren't part of the codebase, they don't do anything without the engine, and the engine doesn't do much without them, so they certainly seem to be a derivative work... But even if it is legal, it's a very lousy thing to do.

I'm sick of projects that advertise themselves as "open source" when in reality, they are nothing more than freeware-not-for-commercial-use compilations that are impossible to legally distribute for most purposes.

It's good to know that one project gets it, and only allows GPL licensed content in the core game.

Anyway, thanks again for being on the side of freedom.

As an artist and a programmer, I appreciate learning techniques from both sides of the spectrum. It's a shame that many other projects aren't as open as Nexuiz because while they are trying to protect themselves, they are hurting interested people like myself by limiting our knowledge and ability to learn. I've learn A LOT from Nexuiz.

Right you are! I totally misread that -- for some reason I had it in my head that it used non-GPL textures. Good catch!
