Don't know if this is possible but just an idea

  • Would Steam be willing to work with you on Nexuiz such as you provide them with an extra game to download free, Nexuiz gets more users and publicity and hopefully there can be some work around to include the VAC system into Nexuiz?

I already know about the licences issue but I'm just wondering if this is a possibility since it would:

    1: Increase the popularity
2: Decrease anyones attempt to cheat (Being banned from all VAC games is not what anyone needs when they are paying for most of it)
3: Be on a mainstream site which is browsed and used by millions of people.

Not saying it's possible. Just a query.

  • Screw VAC for Nexuiz. The game is basically secure as it is!

However the extra amount of playerbase would be neat. I still get the feeling it probably wouldnt work though.

  • Well I think steam is downloaded for free. The VAC thing is centralised though so I dont know about that.

  • If it means not letting anyone play without steam, then I am absolutely against it. E.g. I cannot even RUN steam here.

If it means just using Steam as an additional distribution service, then why not, but it won't help against cheating then.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • i think steam is a bad idea. they have a tendency to steal from their 3rd party dev's and pass it off as their own, and vac isnt that great. everytime a hack for CS or HL is detected, ten more appear that arent.

  • Steam itself is free. Included is a store where you can buy games some are also free so I just guessed they work with other people on the outside.

About VAC included - I don't think its possible due to it being used by every game using the source engine i guess it's linked to that?

The steam client doesn't need to be used to run games. I recently had GRID from there and I can run that with or without Steam being open, The Valve games are the only ones I think that need steam to run because they use Vavles server tools.

Steam isn't available for Linux to my knowledge. But I can't see that would be a problem for anyone. I'm not taking a shot at Linux users here I myself use both but windows is the one where most the gamers are so I do see that as a first point of contact.

Steam runs pretty damn well in WINE along with ALL the Half-Life games and Source-powered games from Valve. Other games on Steam also work in WINE.

  • What kind of anti-cheat features do you want to add to an open-source game? It's always possible to circumvent them. And if steam can somehow control the client's hashes or whatever, people would still be able to use modified clients downloading the game from somewhere else. The only solution would then be to have steam-only servers? No, thanks.

And what the hell exactly is VAC? Does it run on top of the engine, or is it integrated? If it's integrated, please show me how it's GPL compatible, or end this discussion.

Same thing for being distributed through Steam, what about the licencing? The GPL is not compatible with DRM
    Meh.

  • Steam is not available for Linux, but it usually works fine with wine...or so I've heard. I avoid wine as I have no reason to run windows programs in Linux (although I may dual boot after starcraft 2 comes out)

Steam is not opensource. It is Valve's proprietary distribution software. VAC, stands for Valve Anti-Cheat. It bans players from playing games online after it detects cheats. It's integrated into the Steam client.

  • Okay, and what about licencing? And how is VAC supposed to detect cheats from an open-source game that you are supposed to be free to modify?

  • I did say I was pretty unsure about VAC being able to be used, I'm actually pretty confident we can forget that happening.

Nexuiz under steam would not be DRM protected. I recently bought Grid from Steam. I don't have to be logged in to play it, I don't have to be online. These are all misconceptions. You do however have to be online for Left 4 Dead, Halflife Deathmatch, Team Fortress - All of which are Valve games running on a basic of logging into steam servers. So even myself I'm against having to log into a steam server to play a game.

Steam isn't an open source program however developers can open discussions with steam to add a game to a list. A few indie developers have already done this and got some games on there, Maybe theres something I'm missing but if a game is being distrubuted free where is the money? I'm guessing they must be making some allowances to give users some free games.

I can't see any harm in talking to them and seeing if it's just a possibility to add the game to the download list or not.

I'd suggest the same with other content delivery services such as games for windows or direct2drive however I've never seen anything free on direct2drive. I guess someone from Alientrap would have a good idea how Games For Windows works since theres a few devs working on a Microsoft Live Arcade game for the marketplace right?

Theres no harm in someone discussing it anyway. If it succeeds nexuiz gets more users rapidly. if it fails then we are stuck with the same people almost everyday for the next 6 months after the summer holidays are over.

Last time I tried you didn't need to be online to play those games... but that was 3-4 years ago :P

Besides. I think Valve Software rejected Nexuiz to be included to Steam (this was around 2.0), because Nexuiz was already widely spread.
