Though I'm not old-school (started out with 2.3) I agree that something needs to be done about the taunts. This game has a much different atmosphere than say Unreal Tournament 99, Assault on Dark Athena, Kingpin, or anything else that's darker. Nexuiz seems to be built more around straight old-school action with a more "fun" element than those other games. The disrespectful taunts seem a bit out of place in this game.

Though I was just an modeler apprentice at that time so it's only much later that I started to do stuff.

Same here, I mostly say it only during actual good games. Good games in my terms on CTF are somewhat fair teams and both sides have to work hard to score. DM matches are more difficult to determine but I suppose, unless one or two people totally own everyone else, than most games could be good.

Erm... there have always been players, fragging us hangabouts, idlers, chatters, etc. This has never been a problem for me. Part of the fun is trying to outrun or outhide them We used to call the fraggers or players fragging in the peace area the 'bullies'. But even on [PB]Minsta I never kicked someone because of this, iirc. After all, it's a fraggers game in the first place, right?

We have just stopped doing that I suppose (doing that weird stuff on public servers). As to why that is... part of it is that we kinda moved into wanting more control over a server with maps, mods, models, cvars and that you can only get on your own server. And most of us just don't play that much anymore either, let alone all together at the same time. On the other hand, it makes the peace parties all the more fun eh

And about saying GG after a game. When I last played regularly some weeks ago, this was still used on my favorite servers. Personally I always use my 'Good Game :]' bind, unless something was really wrong with that particular game.

Systematic crackdowns and constant surveillance is the anti-thesis of a close and friendly community.

I don't expect there will be systematic crackdowns or constant surveillance, simply because not enough people will be able to commit to a fixed schedule.

But it would be helpful if the server owners appoint a sufficiently large number of masters to achieve a good coverage. And for the rest of the time there are still normal kick/kickban votes, provided that people know how to find the right function key for a change.

Last night, I played on DCC CTF server. There was this guy names Nadz who kept spamming and spamming and spamming 'Nadz nadz nadz (etc.)' AND made a vote covered in the spam that had the text 'kick nadz', but the vote actually was a timelimit -1 (to end the map).
People of course pressed F1 but it wasn't until like the 5th time the map changed people stopped pressing F1.
Then I managed to get a vote in there to kick him, it got accepted but as I didn't see and ban vote (didn't work at least to vote for it) he came back.
He tried this time to get the master command but it always failed. I did more vote commands as soon as this one timed out or got rejected. He was kicked several times but of course came back.

I would actually want master status on such servers to stop idiots like that. Eventually I believe he got banned. I left the server and came back after a while and he was gone, then I saw someone named Mr Green to have master status so I believe it was him who banned him. I actually tried to vote to become master myself but I failed to understand the proper vote command and vhelp didn't help me to understand any better how to make that command.

I even when to IRC and asked if there was any DCC masters/admins but it was late at night and wasn't surprised no one answered.
So to ANY DCC admins I would like to request to become a master. I have had master status on both div0's servers and Esteels .de, however I don't know if passwords changed so don't know if I still have it (and if I do I most surely have forgot the passwords ;p). Would like to have it there as well though (on the planetnexuiz.de), as Lazy Dog no longer exists I believe.

I don't play too often but I do hope to playing a bit more often. And I'm pretty much always available on IRC so one could just highlight me if a troublemaker is on those servers.

I second ai on that as well. The nadz guy has been a real pest as of late and its difficult to actually get him kicked due to the spamming and the fact he always calls a vote as soon as he begins. Ideally we just need more of the active players as admins to kick the nastier ones, we aren't trying to turn the game into a police state.

iirc I've banned the guy once for a week.

So it wasn't enough for him.

Tell him, if you see him ingame, he'll get a ban for ONE MONTH next time.

Only verbal trolls remain, a mute/kick vote will pass if such troll is truly irritating, because then a majority of people are actually reading the chat & will see the vote.

But the most comprehensive usage of player masters is in Sauerbraten, where the first person on a server can claim master, and if the master is cheating or otherwise inept, players will join another server if they care to.

Flood protection? Is in place, but can't handle the grey zone between legitimate chat and spam.

Friendly fire? It is possible to switch off the possibility to laser team mates into space? You found a way to prevent someone from taking the enemy flag and go into hiding without ever capturing?

My favourite CTF server has at least 3 masters who play quite regularly and 3 masters who show up not so often.

Unless it is disabled on the server, which it should. There was too much abuse with it. After all, becoming master is the dream of every troll.

When you decide to use it, also tell me and merlijn the IP of your server so I can add it to my trusted_servers list (so I get your bans too).

However, this should really not be enabled by default... but we could put commented out lines for it in the default server.cfg, or even better, active lines for it with the trusted servers list empty (so all bans with a set reason get reported to the server, and any other server admin can choose which ones to import by taking the server IPs from the ban list website).

What does someone do if they get on this list unfairly?
