What makes for a good match? (saying GG at the end)

Discuss anything to do with Nexuiz here.

  • I've seen this many times now, where various players at the end of a pretty bad match will say "gg" as naturally as they are breathing, like it doesn't mean anything.

I, personally, don't enjoy matches that are one-sided, even if I'm on the winning team. I like matches that are competitive. Those are enjoyable. Those are good games. I've had this discussion numerous times with people and it appears to be pretty universal that a "good game" would require that the match is balanced enough to be competitive.

I've been playing recently on Euro servers (mainly DCC Laid back delight) during the daytime here when I take breaks from working. Team balance is always a problem on public servers, but it appears to be far WORSE of a problem on DCC laid back delight. I just played 6 matches today and 4 of them were off balance with resulting scores like 9-1, 10-2, 8-0 and such. 2 of the matches had an unbalanced number of players on the winning team, but also the skill level of the teams was unbalanced.

So, I don't say "gg" at the end of bad games. I just don't do it. I don't think it's polite to be untruthful. I just don't say anything, or I make a comment about the match being unbalanced, with the hopes that people will pay more attention to that in future matches.

I'm half venting here and half asking for feedback. This is an issue in Nexuiz that I've complained about from 2.5 years ago or whenever I first started playing Nexuiz. So I don't expect it to be "fixed" anytime soon.

  • DCC has had that problem for quite some time... I'm not really sure why.
I usually join it out of desperation (no other server available), and leave in frustration. Ugh.

And yeah, I "gg" when there is actually competition, and I felt I had to make an effort to try to win. But when it gets too competitive (as in, noone playing for fun), then it's as bad as an unbalanced game, really.
    Meh.

  • it's nothing but a formality, just like if a little league game ended up as a lopsided win, the teams would still do the lining up to say gg

  • For me a good game constitutes both a balance math, and somewhat decent playing myself. I guess I'm too frustrated to say gg when I was playing like shit.

On a related note, we've notice the same kind of unbalance at Simba - and our answer was to be more actively watch the teams and correct people who join the winning team on purpose. We're actually in the process of automating this as much as possible (in a more sane way than g_balance_teams_force).

Also a while back we dramatically lowered the nex damage, and thanks to Spaceman we've been running stats on our server logs - and it turned out that matches got WAY more balanced after this change. I don't have the numbers handy, but the numbers got far better on monthly averages - also we used this to get rid of maps that were doomed to be unbalanced (for example eggandbacon).

  • well, since I started out playing in December, (soon a year now) in the first place and being a noob back then, everything was "gg".
Except those times (loads) when "normal" players just ran me over like a freight train.

Basically, I just started saying "gg", if I felt I myself did all right.
I still stick with that rule. However, I on the other hand often just use the laser or cl_handicap 2 or more.
So its on the same level sort of, when I play against players with my own skill level, back in December - March, especially over at DCC Beginners.
Of course, if I notice someone really made an effort to put me down, I also say "gg". It's that kind of balance I try to keep any ways.

  • I say "gg" in honour of the polygonic men who left their virtual lives in battle. It's about respect. Respect toward those who won, respect to those who lost, and respect toward those who respect the code. By saying "gg" i thank those who helped me win or those who helped me learn something by defeating me. If a game was exceptionally satisfying i take my time to say "Good Game!" to show that i care enough to write it out.

basically the longwinded version of what i said, boils down to nothing but a formality/good sportsmanship

  • I just finished playing CTF on the Simba server and it was 5 Vs 3 and 1 of the 3 was a new player. No one would switch. :?

Not what I would consider a GG

Seems like there a true GG is a rarity now

  • first game i played online I didn't say gg, because I didn't know how to send messages :p

    now I do, but i can't play online :(

also, the few times where I have access to high speed, i try and play online, but 9 out of 10 games i join are nothing but bots. it's very irritating.

  • Just to be respectful, I press my keybind to say "good game" at the end of every match.

I think a good game is really when the players had fun, because nobody plays unfun games; so fun games are good games. :)

  • GG at the end of games is about sportsmanship, not about how good a match was.

I agree. gg is just courtesy and sportsmanship. No matter how bad the game was :) BTW: how about this for a balancing mode: If the server sees that the game is very unbalanced, start a countdown [like 20 secs]. If noone balances the teams [only player count wise. you cannot really balance for skill] end the match...

  • so if it would be 9v3 and the undersized team got some newbies .. they lose 0-10 .
you say still gg? come on.. wheres the "sportsmanship" here?

Autobalance is not good. for example: 6v6 - 1 team more or less newbies , 1 team 'pros'. if you want to help the newbies you change (so its 7v5 for a sec) but after that you are immediately in the same team again because of autobalance.

lda17h: it should not end the match.. people could abuse it to change the map if they don't like it. but maybe the the game stops and it only continues if its balanced.

Of course you are right with the 9v3 example. There the basic sportsmanship is missing frmo the start.. But in highly unbalanced [skillwise, not player count] games, it is still basic courtesy to tell the losing team that it was a good game thereby also acknowledging that you don't look down on them [in any case it's one million times better than "AHAHAHA GAY LOSER TEAM AHAHAHA NADZ NADZ NADZ"].. So what are we talking about again? "gg" pfffft...

  • Don't put too much weight into the respect/sportsmanship part of "gg". Others don't necessarily know what it is supposed to mean or they will mistake it for irony.

  • i say gg when i had fun in a game or when i found the other player(s) played well. if i play a lower skill player, i will say gg at the end to show that i respect that he played it completely without doing lame things, like quiting before the end or complaining that i always jump away when hes about to have me, etc.... If i play a game and i get owned i always say gg just by respect for the skills. if i play a game and i win but the other player did lame things i wont say gg. Basicly i say gg at the end of 99% of the games i play.

Yeah, or just scramble the players and put them into red and blue evenly.. So people have an additional incentive to change (besides creating a better game), even if it is an altruistic one: to keep everyone else from being changed forcibly..

  • I mostly (95% of the games) play on DCC's and Simba.
I seem to like DCC's more; I like more the maps in there, teams do get unfair, but not as much as on Simba.
I just played an hour (3-4 games at simba's) and balance was horrid at times. On the first games, we were about 6-8 players and the last ones had the server full. The last game was a heck of fun, balanced, and intensive, but the other 3 were annoying and at times frustrating. In the first one, I was playing alone vs 3 players for 5 minutes, and I didn't even notice until someone asked for balance.
Rocket launcher, rocket launcher, everywhere. I hate that. It happens a lot on Simba. That crap drives me nuts.
When I found the game decent or good, I say gg. If unbalanced but fun it's just "gg but unbalanced at times"
When I found the game a bit unbalanced most of the time, but fair in terms of fun (not frustrating but also not exciting), and I usually disconnect; I say ok.
When it was unfair, annoying, frustrating, I shut my mouth close; sometimes I say unbalanced, frustrating, not fun...

I remember saying in the chat "that was a heck of frustrating and bad game" and saying gg. Someone replied me "if it was bad, why gg?". Since then I use the ok.

I have the opposite feeling about general balance on these servers...

I believe there's tons of RL on simba, but tons of nex on dcc, right?

  • I will say that while I dont mind the foam padded nex on simba a huge deal (skills are better than weaponary) its still a slight annoyance. I STILL see campers repeatedly.

If you really want to do it, make the nex secondary something else and mark the server distinctly [CUSTOM] / [UNPURE] or some such.

i stopped playing on it just because of this for the most part. The nex is the finishing part of my combo and without it the RL is far too slow to make it viable. I'm sure others will agree on this part.

Although, in kudos I know that simba has "nex damage reduced to 50 from 140" or some such in the MOTD which does redeem this.

Just hope the better maps come in asap. Want to see those space floaters shot in the face and removed.

Anyway. Crap. I've lost track of this thread now... ah yes. I had a chat with a cherished friend from nexuiz and realised I'm unbalancing the pubs along with other well skilled folk.

I'd just like to say I don't unbalance deliberately but what tends to happen is if I switch team it just balances the other way and someone has to win eventually... I'm sure others experience the same.

I can elaborate on this but I'm not going to just now. Its 9am and I ain't been to sleep yet. If anyone wants elaboration please nudge me in a PM and I'll post more here or what not.
