  • Man I gotta say, the 2.5.3 hotfix is the coolest (as in cold) hotfix of all time. I'm starting to believe it has gone the same path as Duke Nukem Forever. RIP!

It's like someone is in the ocean drowning, but instead of jumping in you get a nice sun tan, then put on diving gear, building your boat you gonna use to get out there, take a vacation, continue with the boat, take off the diving gear cause it's in the way, finish the boat, put on the diving gear again, calling the paramedics so they can be on the boat, buying blankets and towels, getting on the boat, fueling it up, trying to start it but it won't go, calling the mechanics so they can fix the problem, try to start the boat again, going out at see, trying to remember which location that person was in, diving in and searching, eventually finding the sole bone remains of what used to be a good looking girl*.

    Poor poor girl*.

    * Replace this with whatever you want, i.e. 'game'.

  • You know for a hotfix this is taking one hell of a long time to release. I can understand wanting to make a well polished release, but a hotfix really isn't supposed anything fancy and there were only two problems that plagued 2.5.2 gameplay wise.

  • Basically, there were far too many changes (Both engine and Nexuiz) that simply made it impossible for us to release it quickly.. One of those being ODE.. At this point, it may be another month of work to even consider releasing it stable. (Adding features without a schedule SUCKS)
Do it yourself, or stop complaining.

Sorry but thats bullshit. Both engine and gamecode are on svn so going back to a "stable version" is easy enough. The issue here is noone cares enough atm.

  • afaik. The biggest issue NOW is performance with collisions? That's engine.
I believe the Nexuiz part is stable. So we should be able to just release 2.5.3 with older stable engine.

It was originally considered to be a hotfix, that fixes the 3 biggest problems that currently making the game hardly playable for many many new guys. Don't get me wrong but whats the heck is point of implementing ODE into a hotfix? It's just making the engine unstable, and giving tons of work, when it could really wait until 2.5.5. :P
About the performance problems: if its engine sided and is a really complicated problem, why can't it be temporarily turned back as it was in 2.5.1, so people could play it again until 2.5.5 comes out?
I have pretty good hardware so I don't have any performance problems, its not just some selfish whining, but I can imagine how many people are annoyed with the console flood and other stuffs: I'm talking in the name of them.

ODE will not be in 2.5.3, the performance issues unrelated to ODE. I think. :P

Lies, and now with FruitieX committing CA it's potentially even worse. -- But well, yes, no one cares that we SHOULD be releasing a hotfix -- not an entirely new version.

Isn't that exactly what we always did? But sure, we never did that with Darkplaces.

You're right, I don't care about postponing my commits, making managing all the changes hell to manage when the release should have been out ages ago. Just don't merge the stuff that's new and untested into the next release, which should have been rushed out asap anyway. It was supposed to be a HOTFIX, dammit. :P

  • The problem is that there is no single stable revision of DarkPlaces, and that we have no infrastructure allowing to cherry pick commits from DP and I currently see no good way to create one.

Basically, I _could_ make my own svn for that somewhere, but then I will be forced to maintain that forever as nobody would ever volunteer for it, and I really don't want that. So I'd rather wait for a stable DP revision. But, we are also looking into git to do such cherry-picking in a much more reliable manner (because the SVN way quite often breaks).

The other problem is that I am the only person who can make a release, but I am too stuffed with my job. So I certainly won't be able to fix all the problems current DP may have, or test whether it does not have them.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • I hope 2.5.3 will be released soon. But I hope there will be some neat new features in this release too. So devs, please take time to make a good release.

and right there ladies and gentlemen, was the official line "suggesting" that the poor patch is way way overdue.
I for one is chocked by this and I even put a smiley here below to give weight to my statement.

    LOOK AT IT ---> :shock:

Now that's how I look like in front my computer somewhere sort of smack in the middle of Sweden.
I have to tell you, I don't want to imagine moar people around the world, sitting there all chocked yellow and their eyes popped out of their sockets.
For the love of whatever cute furry or by all means in case of allergy's (and the lack of hookworms), bare assed something you all hold dear, gief patch noaw.. please..
or oh why not a timemachine.

Yes, I should do something useful, think of Newton or Sartre for the love of his noodly appendage, what ARE (I)we doing with our life's people? Did I brake down the planetary systems movement to its most basic part in the summer of my twenty-fourth year? Hm..

Well, again -- The devs with commit access don't really use the website. But well, it's true there aren't many changes other than behind the scenes changes. We have quite a lot of engine changes and etc, though.
