New Nexuiz Ladder (Multi-Ladder)

  • Finally I managed it to finish the Nexuiz Multi-Ladder script and to get it going.

The new script allows us to have not only one ladder (which is currently the good old Nex 1on1 ladder) but also more than one ladder. I can create new 1on1 and also team ladders. You can volontarily decide whether you want to join one or more of the existing ladders, you can also leave ladders.

However, I majorly created the script to allow us to have a team ladder.

My question to you is: what kind of team ladder ? what needs to be determined are these things:
    • size (minimum/maximum): shall it be a 2on2 ladder ? or a 3on3 ladder ? This would mean to set the "minimum" size to 2 (if 2on2) or 3 (if 3on3). and what about the maximum amount of members per team ? I would say 4 or 5 members for a 2on2 ladder
    • gamemode: what gamemode shall be played ? Deathmatch ? I think CTF is not mature enough, there's no real score system yet and before we have a proper score system we shouldn't use CTF either
    • modification: pure Team-Deathmatch ? or Minstagib TDM ? there are many possibilities
    • mappool: what maps should be played ? Of course this decision depends heavily on the minimum size of the ladder. a 2on2 ladder will certainly allow some more maps than a 3on3+ ladder, because we have more "smaller" maps than bigger ones.

This are many things to decide about. I won't start a real poll here (and I also don't want others to do this, let me do the organisation of all this please). However, we have to consider that our community isn't really that big. so pleaso don't ask to have several ladders with strange gamemode/modificator combinations, because this WILL end up in small barely-used ladders which I don't like to risk.

For now I want you to discuss about having only ONE NEW team ladder. Don't propose things about having several ladders at the moment.

What I'm proposing here is always referring to other ladders of other games such as Quake 3/4 and UnrealTournamen2kX and what ladders these games have.

    My suggestions would be:
Gamemode: TeamDeathmatch! There are other fine gamemodes as well, e.g. Domination. but nevertheless I think DM is the best mode. CTF is not suitable yet.

Modification: pure TDM! there are some fine variations, but I think the only other popular modification would be (m)instagib.

size: although I would really like to have 5on5 matches I think that this is not suitable for nexuiz right now, because a) the community is too small for that and b) we have a lack of big maps for this. Because of this I would suggest to have a 3on3 or 2on2 ladder (I think that this wil be decided in a poll sometime). Maximum size of a team could be 4-6 members (4 for 2on2 and 6 for 3on3).

mappool: well, this is a hard thing. Once again, I don't like to have custom maps for the ladder.
The mappool of course depends on the size of the ladder. This is my proposal of maps for the mappool:
    - bleach (for 2on2 and 3on3)
    - slimepit (for 2on2, might be a bit tight though)
    - blood prison (2on2, maybe 3on3 ? needs to be tested)
    - farewell (2on2, maybe 3on3 ?)
    - aneurysmn (2on2, 3on3)
    - stormkeep (2on2, 3on3 as well ?)
    - toxic (2on2)
    - soylent (2on2)
    - warfare (2on2 .. 3on3 as well ??)
    - silvercity (3on3 and above)
    - nexdm18+remix (2on2)
    - darkzone (2on2)
    - aggressor (2on2)
    - runningmanctf as TDM version (3on3 and above)

Of course this list is very subjective and may also be mistaken. However I think that we would have enough maps for 2on2 and 3on3, and I also wouldn't mind to have a 2on2 AND a 3on3 ladder, but for now I want to have only one new ladder!

About the servers: I am glad that we have a variety of servers which the users of the 1on1 ladder can use. I can of course understand that it would mean a problem for the people who provide the servers to serve even more servers that can be used for 2on2/3on3 matches. However I discovered that it can be possible to create a new alias command on the server that could switch a 2on2/3on3 server to a 1on1 server and vice versa. making such an alias votable would mean that the players have the possibility to set the server to a team or 1on1 mode when this is required.

    Just post your thoughts...

  • my two cents:

i totally agree that ctf isn't mature enough to be used in the ladder, although it is pure fun and the climax of teamplay skill.
maybe some ppl haven't noticed, but there's a whole own minstagib community by now and a lot of people have asked me if there's something like a minstagib-ladder. i'd say to please this community it'd be nice to have one, 2on2 or 3on3.
for the maps there should be a vote :)

apart from that: thanks green for all the hard work you're doing to get the ladder running. awesome, man 8)

  • I agree that a Minstagib Ladder (for 1on1/team modes) is a nice idea, but it shouldn't be the first new ladder we introduce! A TDM standard ladder is the thing every game should have, and this makes a lot of fun, too.

  • As I can see people are really concerned about the future of the nexuiz ladder(s).

Really a lot of responses that are all serious and wise.

  • My 2 cent: a 2on2 tdm ladder for the start. I know minstagib has lots of fans but will it be played in a tdm-ladder?? With 2on2 is easier to get all the players together and get on with the action.
I myself would love to see a ctf ladder but we need more maps first :)
And maybe its also worth to add a 1 month timelimit after accepting to play the match. I just seen it with myself. I have lots of work in real life at the moment and when it comes to the ladder i feel like not being at 100% right now so i rather wait with playing. Guess its ok to feel like this but i also makes me having 4 or 5 open challanges. Ok.. all to people that i need a very very good day to maybe be able to beat them but i think it would be better for the ladder if i were forced to play them. Though i really hate playing if i do not feel like 'ok' but its bad to let it drag like this :)

yeah, I also thought about this. however I have the problem when giving penalty points, because a cleanup script can't recognize whose fault it really is that an accepted match is pending for weeks ... or even months.

So the solution would be either to just delete the accepted challenge after xx days without giving penalty points or to do this manually (which needs an admin who investigates every match and sends PMs to the players which is very much work. And although I could try to let the script send the PMs and recognize whether they were read by the target user and whether they replied, it is still not such a secure thing and errors might happen, so this isn't a real alternative either).

However, if I would chose the solution "just delete the match" all the pressure for the players would be gone, too.

Well, maybe if I got too much spare time, I could create a subpage for admins only that lets them view all matches that are accepted and not played yet for xx days. admins could then auto-send PMs to both players and the script could have an eye on the PMs` status (whether they are read), the admin could mark checkboxes whether he received an answer and could then assign penalty points accordingly ... well, no idea ^^

and the other alternative: giving both players a PP, is unfair as well because one of the players could have really tried to get the match going while the other player ignores that

  • Okay.
Since the feedback is really really poor (and I am really disappointed about that) I decided to simply do what I consider to be the best solution .

For a start I launched the 2on2 ladder now. It's the first team vs. team ladder for Nexuiz and means that 2 players per team play against another team (the gamemode is usual team deathmatch).

All needed information is described in the news on the Nexuiz Ladders page! Please visit the Help page as well (when being logged in) because it will explain a lot of how to use the several pages on the ladder.

    Happy fragging :D

  • I can't remember all of the maps put up there but ill comment on a few'

aggressor...will be to hectic, wont allow for any kind of control imo, cause of close you can spawn to people, lack of room to move around enough, it's a great 1on1 map, but it's not suitable for 2on2.

darkzone, although it's not a big layout, many weopens, many powerups *armours and MH* to control, and it has enough weopens e.t.c, so this could be good.

toxic: Such a good layout for 2on2 once you get to the mid sections, and i think this will be ace for people who love to try get control of a map also. it just seems to me it would be an awesome 2on2 map.

soylent...not to sure, i really dont think it's good enough for 2on2, pushing people into space is good and all, but i can see myself being killed more times from being pushed off then actually being fragged, and i dont think it flows well enough for 2on2 personally id get quite bored of it.

i'll comment on more as i remember them.

    oh;

slimepit: 2on2...maybe..but there much stuff in armour terms to control + i can see this being easily to dominate by 2 good players who know what there doing.

I don't know if its me but the maps just some of them dont seem to good for 2on2 like.

bloodprison, that's a really cool map for 2on2, nicely spread and layout, gives you opportunity to move around middle top and bottom, and weopen placement is perfect.

  • for now I added these maps:
    - bleach
    - blood prison
    - farewell
    - aneurysmn
    - stormkeep
    - toxic
    - soylent
    - warfare
    - runningman+remix
    - darkzone

I agree that Slimepit might be too tiny for 2on2s and can be controlled too easily.
However, Soylent Space is a map which we should give a try ;).
I trust on what you say about aggressor, so I kept it out.
