  • Hi,
    I asked myself recently why there is no lightning gun in nexuiz. I found several posts in the forum, which mentioned the lightning gun (for example as a replacement for the crylink), but I didn't find an answer why it's not in the game. Is there any reason against such kind of weapon?

    Since it existed in Q1 and nexuiz evolved from it (afaik), there might have been a reason to remove it. If anyone just could tell me why, would be nice.

  • By that logic, one could ask why there's no lightning gun in Half-life, since it stemmed from Quake, too - the answer is, of course, that they're both based off the engine, but try to be unique games from Quake.

    It would be possible, of course, but the devs must've just thought that the weapons they went with fit in better with the balance and style of the game.

  • The Thunderbolt (it's proper name) had a limited range. This ties in with the general theme in Quake that there is no long distance weapon, it favours close cambat. Nexuiz on the other hand has more long range combat because of the Nexgun, the rocket detonations with the RL and the high speed of the Hagar and grenade launcher.

  • Wow, quick reply, thanks for the answer, Ed. Although I cannot really share this point of view, since I think one gets quite often close enough during a fight in nexuiz. And Q3 also has a railgun and a lightning gun. But anyway, I don't want to start a flamewar about the lightning gun, I was actually just curious about the reason.

    @Shoe:
    Btw, I think there is something called Gluon Gun in Halflife1 DM, which is somewhat like a lightning gun, iirc.

    Oh, I think I remember what you're talking about now. I feel kind of silly forgetting it, but I guess it did sorta help prove my point :)

  • I guess the main point is that nexuiz already has enough weapons and more would only be confusing. However Nexuiz has quite some similar firemodes so replacing one of them with a lightninggun style firemode would be an idea. There have been talks about replacing the hagar secondary (which i find quite useless but still better then the old sec.firemode) with a sort a flamethrower but right now that would be bad for the newwork traffic. That would be a nice thing.

    OMG don't do that now its perfect. I make insane kills using the walls with the hagar secondary fire, and really i dont want to see a flame-thrower in nexuiz.

    On the other hand, replacing the crylink with a plasma-arrow-thrower could be so fun. I really would like to have some projectiles that can stay sticked on the walls. :)

  • I think we should keep the Nexuiz style and I strongly believe the H.L.A.C. is both Nexuiz style and refreshingly spicy. A "Lightning Gun" would also be a nice idea, since some of the alternate fire modi are a bit inconsistent and unprofitting. I had the idea of customizable alt fire modes and I DEMAND THE HLAC!!! OMG I DEMAND THE HLAC NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    How is this bad ? the hagar rockets the hagar spits out should be enough to draw the flametrower right ? (next make the "bullet"/flames cast some particles at client side to increase the decenty of the flame ... should work imho ...

    <Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
    <Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
    <Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along

  • When me and Havoc were designing the weapons we went through almost every past weapon we could think of. A lightning gun just didn't work, it was too hard to actually hit the person, and we couldn't figure out the right range, and it was impossible to get a good effect (this was actually the main reason).
