  • The website download.com is popular, Alexa rates it as the 117th most visited site. They offer a download of Nexuiz (http://msn-cnet.com.com/Nexuiz/3000-7453_4-10424770.html)

This must be an outdated version, at 158 MB. and being uploaded over a year ago.. I know there are better sites to download Nexuiz from (sourceforge.net), but download.com is visited by many people, so they should have a current version of nexuiz available to download.

I tried the upload process and it involves a lot of jumping through hoops. Does anyone know who originally uploaded to the site? I think it is kind of important to update the site, so anyone who spends their time downloading Nexuiz fom this slow site can be rewarded.

When it was originally uploaded, Nexuiz was an Editor's Choice, but too many bad reviews (http://msn-cnet.com.com/Nexuiz/3640-7453_4-10424770.html?pn=3&sb=0&v=0 made them change their mind and silently revoke their editor's choice award.

  • download.com is a total mess. Useless. Best source for out of date stuff that's a security risk. All of the GPL stuff could be better sourced from the authors. Typical 'not-really-free-spyware-infested-tat' offered as well.

  • I agree, Ed, but Download.com logged 52 downloads of Nexuiz 1.1 last week, and Nexuiz 1.5 was downloaded over 200 times. Those numbers are most likely an overstatement, but still it means that people are clicking on it and trying to get Nexuiz through this channel.

We need to help those people.

  • Download.com is as famous as a blue-striped dog (or snoop dog)! It even came with my Opera bookmarks! I wouldnt mind some old nexuiz servers but, well... am a weirdo. They should lock the old versions or at least have some warning that says "OUTDATED!" cause i mean that gives bad credit to Nexuiz!

This comes at no surprise to me. I suspect many of the bad reviews come from people playing outdated versions of Nexuiz - yet another reason why an updated version of Nexuiz needs to go onto Download.com!

EDIT: Is anyone trying to get Nexuiz 2.0 up using Upload.com? Because if no one is I'll give it a go on the weekend.

  • Hi Dave,

I looked up the contact information for your company, and it turns out that Lee Vermeulen is currently the manager of the products
found on our download sites. Since we can only have one person manage company products via Upload.com, I recommend that
you contact that person (lvermeulen@shaw.ca) for access to the account.

The account owner can change the current login email address to a new one via the "Update account information"
link found in the right hand corner of the Upload Manager page. After the email address is changed, any password issues can
be resolved via the following URL: http://www.upload.com/1328-21-5.html. I also deleted the record for the email address, so that it can be used to replace the existing email address in the Upload account without any problems.

If for some reason you cannot contact the current account owner, please let me know so that I can look at an alternative
method of getting access for you.

I kind of wish that they had asked/warned me before deleting my account, but Sukhrob was just trying to help.

  • I actually tried uploading Nexuiz 2.0 when it was released, I don't know why it never showed up. With Nexuiz 1.5 it took a few weeks.

I submited another Nexuiz 2.0 and I'll try to contact part of the download.com staff to see if anyone can review it. Hopefully it shows up in the next week at least.

With Alien Arena, they always delay their releases until it gets up on download.com, then they use it as their primary mirror. I think we should probably do that for later releases

Aren't our releases already delayed enough? ;)

  • well its not a bad idea just because we might attract some more newbie gamers visiting download.com impressed with our download numbers. Right now most of our downloads are at sourceforge, usually around 100k, but that doesn't attract a lot of people there

  • But do we really want to delay the release by multiple weeks for that?

What about: Sending it to download.com, then release in the forum only first and tell the Linux distribution packagers to start packaging from the FORUM version, which will be identical to the download.com version that hopefully appears days later, but probably will appear months later?

Other idea: sending it to download.com and releasing it on sourceforge at most a week later, no matter if download.com did it or not?

I guess the former one would yield more hits at download.com. The forum release could be done on some temporary webspace and would become unavailable when the version on download.com is there.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • An excellent alternative to Download.com is Softpedia.com
Those folks have excellent customer service and they are very diligent about updating their software in my experience.
