  • Sure. Just like any other poll asking the "what is best..." question.

  • Hehe, it isn't that easy.

This poll allows ONE vote per REGISTERED user. So to cheat, you would have to register many accounts.

This is very well possible, but easy to find out...

The planetquake poll, however, allows one vote per UNREGISTERED user. So "clear cookies and use another IP" works fine...
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Bugger. For my next trick I'll post an anonymous poll on my poorly maintained, half setup website:
    http://rofltech.co.uk/

Point your 16000 IP's at that!

  • No matter if it encourages cheating, primarily it does destroy the "oh i guess i should try that game because it has so much votes"-thought behind the poll.

  • I don't know if it encourages cheating in the game itself, but it surely encourages cheating in general. All it takes is one coummunity to start, and the rest will follow, so cheating does breed cheating in polls like this. But overall it's not really that big of a deal, unless you consider that the more honest communities could have their game's reputation tarnished slightly if they don't do well(i.e have more people cheat) in the poll than the others. But in the end, it really probably doesn't have a bearing on the size of each game's playerbase.

What is does do, is potentially create hostillity between the communities of each game, and that is a shame. I know that Alien Arena and Nexuiz at times have a had a rocky relationship, but now the communities seem to get along quite well, which is only serving to strengthen both. I attest this to the maturity level of these two game's communities. The fact is, both games have a considerably older fanbase than that of either Warsow or Tremulous, both of which are fine games, but my experiences with their communities recently have been less than cordial, and at times have faced downright hostility and hatred from members of one of them(not devs however, and not on their own forums either, so it shouldn't really be a reflection of the games or the devs)
