Making the crylink useful

  • A balancing suggestion.

    The Crylink is probably the weapon that has undergone most changes throughout the history of the game, but except for in 1.2.1 (i think) its always been pretty useless, cause of its combination of hard-to use-ness, relatively low dmg and high ammo consumption.

    So my suggestion is this:
    keep it as it is, but make it armor-piercing. That is, let all dmg from crylinc go to health, none to armor. That way its use would be more interesting, and it would add a very much tactical use to it in-game, both ffa an 1on1. The dmg for crylink is so low it wont have that much influence in normal game, but its use is suddenly again a part of the tactical wep use in play.

  • My idea for the crylink is a lightning gun too. For secondary fire, it would be a chain-lightning gun. I mean when there are a lot of people in a room, you could zap one, and the the bolt would jump on the next furthest, and then the next one and so on. The damage do would be the same, divided per the players it got linked, and would eat up cell amo like hell.

  • Well, I did some hacking of it, and I found that the secondary fire doing negative damage comes in handy for team matches, and also I had primary fire shoot a chain (like a lightning gun), and had the lifetime put down ALOT, and had the ammo implode ALOT, so it was like the gravity gun from half life, but not.

  • I love the crylink as it is thought it could use more projectiles per shot (and still have the same damage per projectile) especially the primary fire. Also I love the idea of armor piercing.

  • Looking at the RBI logs it doesn't actually stand out as being a problem statistically:

    It's pretty much on a par with the Electro by those numbers. If anything that set of logs shows how the Nexgun has traditionally been overpowered, I think it's a bit farer now.

    Well I guess if you have no extra health or armor and you manage to get a direct hit (all projectiles hit the person), it will kill them, but other than that, yeah pretty much. The rocket launcher, assault rifle, sniper rifle and minigun are prime examples of weapons that have had their balls sliced off.

  • Faster nails would make it easier to hit with.

    It might be cool if we could think of more strategic firemodes for it. Something that would make gameplay more interesting, like the current Electro.

  • You forget three other great wepons of UT- the translocator (pwnage if you manage to pull that off), shock rifle (with an amazing combo), and of course, the Redeemer. Best. Weapon. Evar. We need a small scale nuke in nexuiz IMHO.

  • I suggest a superweapon like a nuke but appearntly there is some kind of problem and nexuiz dosnt support more than 9 weapons.

    The description of the RL says that it fires a rocket with three mini nuclear warheads.

    But that's really just to make it sound tough. The game could use an uberweapon.

    The translocator was used to shoot a little disc that you could teleport to and, if used right, could be used to telefrag people. It was a lot easier in UT99 because it didn't bounce off of people like in UT2k4.

    The shock rifle's primary was a lot like the nex with less kick but quicker firing rate, and its secondary launched large, slow moving energy balls. If you launched the secondary and hit it with the primary, it made a huge explosion that caused a lot of damage, but it's not always easy to pull off.

    The redeemer is just a giant rocket launcher. Its spawn time was slow, as was the flight speed of the rocket itself. But you could control it as a fly-by-wire missile to shoot it right at your enemy, and when it hit, EVERYTHING in the area went kaboom :) The downside of its slow movement, though, is that it could be shot out of the sky if someone spotted it

    No, no, we are here for talking about how to attach some balls to the Crylink.

    You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • I'd say maybe take advantage of the 'cryo' root of the crylink. Slowing players down as they get hit by it would be awesome.

  • I disagree. I've been playing Nexuiz for a couple of weeks now, coming out of a Quake 3 OSP background, and I don't think that any of the weapons should mess with the Nexuiz movement. Once you start getting the hang of it it's really good; but being slowed down would suck, and would constitute a major change in gameplay. No weapon should have that sort of power.

    Nonetheless, I do agree that the cryolink is a pretty useless weapon. I read over a thread started last year around April which discussed ways of improving it, and I had hoped that some of these changes would see their way into 2.2; but apparently those that did were much more minor than suggested.

    I would like to support the view that the cryolink simply needs to be replaced. It has nothing really unique going for it; no particular use or advantage that other weapons don't provide. It's like a rapid-fire SG without the benefit of hitscan. Its accuracy is lousy, its damage is lousy, and although I've really tried using it well (sometimes you have to coz you got nothin' else) I ultimately find myself turning to the secondary fire on the SG when I'm in a pickle.

    A lightning gun really would make a lot of sense. The lightning-rocket combo in Q3 is something which I have always loved, and I can see the mortar serving a similar function in Nex that the RL did in Q3 (I think the Nex RL is probably a tad slow). The lightning gun also has the additional advantage of being very powerful if you use it right, but also a complete waste of time if you can't hold your crosshair steady. Whereas the current cryolink just sucks, whether you can hold steady or not.

    While we're at it, what chance is there of renaming the electro (which sounds like a lightning gun!) to the plasma gun or summat more sensible? It confused the hell out of me for a while because it didn't act consistently with its name...it wasn't until I read the weapon descriptions online that I realized it has nothing whatsoever to do with electricity, as the name suggests, and everything to do with plasma.

  • 'Plasma gun' makes more sense than 'Electro' to me as well.

    I pretty much agree with Bnonn's assessment.

  • Ok I've got it. A chain gun, where the projectiles obey gravity, and it would be short range. It would have the appearance of water spewing out of a fountain. A fountain of deadly plasma, that is.

  • If you do some sort of lightening gun, you should have it do more damage if you are touching the ground. :-)

  • Heh, that's quite a cool idea. If you're being hammered by the LG, just keep jumpin! Seriously, I reckon that would be pretty neat; especially if there was a discharge to the ground when your feet weren't touching anything. It would make the weapon quirky. Quirky is good; it stops it being boring and copyist.

  • I tried to show dave that the crylink is ok...mid-air anyway, secondary it's not bad you just need to take your time with it, me and esteel were doing a pretty good defensive job with him using the machine gun and myself only the crylink to proove a point.

    But anyhow, it's too hard to use for the average player, way to hard.

    I'm in favour of a lightning gun, don't make it draw rainbows or something if one is going to be used....just make it simple and effective :)

  • I remain convinced that the Crylink needs a gimmick.

    As it is, it's boring and not terribly useful.

    Maybe a cloaking device that would just burn through cells.

    Maybe something that would give you a movement trick of some sort, although I can't think of anything useful that you can't already do or something that wouldn't unbalance the game (or at least CTF).

    Maybe a short ranged grapple.

    Maybe a shield of some sort that would burn through cells.

    Maybe marginal auto aim.

    Maybe a something with massive bounce, like a scaled up laser. Or maybe a tractor/repulsor beam.

    Maybe a Turok Rage Wars style flare gun.

    Something that lets you switch places with another player.

    Maybe a cell intensive powerful attack that needs to be charged up.

    Maybe some sort of jetpack function.

    Maybe something that would project a hologram of you.

    Maybe a smoke bomb (if it wouldn't murder framerates).

    I dunno. Just tossing some ideas out.

    Recently Ive tried to use the crylink more often, but really only the secondary fire is in any way usefull. The primary is so innaccurate that at close range, where it might be usefull, the shotgun does a better job- cuz its mo powerful.

  • agreed. but if the c-link is turned into a lightning gun, then it should change names wit the electro imo :D
