  • Okay, this probably sounds dumb, but I've been playing Nexuiz for about 2 months and just now got around to turning off mouse acceleration. Wow! What a difference. I can actually hit people with a Nex sometimes.

Oh, I could always snipe from the other side of the world using a big zoom. But at a medium range when the enemy is moving around and knows you're trying to shoot them, it's much different. You have to move your mouse quickly and accurately. Mouse acceleration makes it very hard to do that.

Anyway, if you don't know about this, it is in your system controls/preferences or in your mouse driver settings. It's different depending on your OS and mouse, but dig around until you find it and switch off acceleration. Your aim will quickly improve.

  • And which OS are YOU running?
I never heard of anything with mouse acceleration being on by default...

  • I'm using a Mac, but with the SteerMouse mouse driver. I think the Mac OS has a built-in acceleration that can't be switched with the preferences. SteerMouse lets me switch it off though.

  • Actually, 2.3 switches acceleration off by default on OS X... and many have trouble with that (mouse getting TOO slow), as posted here.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Switching it off seems like a good idea, but I can see where it would be a surprise if it went off unexpectedly. SteerMouse uses its own acceleration, so I wasn't affected.

I've said it before and here it is again: All Mac users should get SteerMouse or USB Overdrive. It's almost necessary for games and very useful for everything else. Check on the shareware download sites. You can try either for free.
