Melee weapon and hitboxes.

  • Two suggestions/questions/whatever.
    1) Are hitboxes possible? I figure the problem would be the lack of CSQC, but I figure I'd ask for an exact answer. I think hitboxes would add a new degree of strategy to the game.
    2) How hard would it be to add a melee weapon to the game? Maybe not to replace anything else, but possibly as a mutator (like UT's Chainsaw Melee, except just having a melee weapon replace the laser). The laser is nice and all but it really doesn't give the satisfaction that melee weapons do when you pull off a kill with them.

    What exactly do you mean by hitbox in this case? Separating the model into different parts like head, torso arms and so on? Yes its possible iirc

    It has ben tested, so its not that hard.. but it was really lame :) The laser is the melee weapon of nexuiz as its is now :)

  • What you said is exactly what I imagined for hitboxes. I think lack of hitbox detection is the one thing I've always felt was really missing from the game. If nothing else, allowing for proper headshots would be nice :)

  • I just depends on how you setup your hitboxes.. normaly fast games like nexuiz (or quake..) only use one big hitbox because that enough for such high speed games.
    Slower games with several hitboxes are nice but i do not think Nexuiz does need it :)
    But i too think a melee weapon would be nice.

    I understand what you mean, but I diasgree with you.. I a game as fast paced as this, i dont think what you are suggesting would be an imporvement for gameplay. IIRC, this has also been tsted at some point, vermeulen can cleaarify this...

    However, I'm sure a lot of people will agree with you :)

  • My only reasoning comes from playing UT99 and realizing how much fun it is to have someone run into your crosshairs with a weapon like the sniper rifle and get that nice "HEADSHOT!" message. Even if it was just two hitboxes (head and body) I think it'd add something interesting and not too intrusive to the gameplay. This could also help take away from the overpower problem with the Nex. You'd be able to do the massive amount of damage everyone is used to, but only if you hit the head ;)

  • E.g. because of the hotzoes I preffered playing Quake, rather than UTxx, because I didn't like the headshot thing there.

    Beside this: UTxx < Nexuiz if it's about playermovement speed, Nexuiz is really faster imo, and unless there is a really proper antilag it won't make sense anyway ;) (I do have slight problems with direct aiming with the current antilag)

    If it's just that: get the UT headshot sound and put it in Nexuiz/data/sound/misc/hit.wav :P

  • I don't think that headshots have to be obtrusive. Just play the message, dont do extra damage.
