  • A malevolent player on a CTF server didn't like me for some reason. He created a kick vote but it failed so, he tricked everyone into kick-banning me from the server by changing his name to match mine exactly. Then he simply created a kickban vote and succeeded in getting me banned from the server.

I know that getting the ban removed is an issue I must take up with the server admin. However, can't something be done in the game to prevent this from happening in the first place? If not, then maybe there should be a solution in the next version.

  • There are some griefers that do random kicks to people on the server. Often those of us with high scores. Normally it doesnt make a difference because people can generally tell whos being the utter moron.

I read the circumstances of your issue in another thread, it seems that we have to prevent people from having identical names :P

  • too bad there are enough ways to make names LOOK identical... but maybe we can do something anyway
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Well, I talked to players a little earlier today. Their complaint was, How do they know which player is the real playername? I logged onto the server tonight and five minutes into playing, the list jerk did it again before I even noticed he was online. He changed his name to match mine and initiated a kick-ban. I was kicked from the server but not before taking down his IP address and getting a screenshot.

  • Furthermore, his kickban notice says "impersonating me". So everyone thinks its the real me calling the vote when its actually the imposter.

Man he really doesnt like you... you could always go on the server with a different name then do the same to him for a laugh/revenge.

  • The guy goes by a few names but I'm supposed to keep this hush so I really can't say more. Galt took care of it, supposedly. Not sure how long it will keep the guy away.

  • The problem is - even if we forbade two players having the same name. Then someone could join with your name, and then you can't join the server too (like it is on IRC).

The annoyance just gets shifted. Not really improved.

  • Here's a suggestion, you could have the server append a numeral or something to the name that later joins. If not, maybe there is some other solution to fixing this problem:

"PlayerX called a vote for KICKBAN #19 [PlayerX]: impersonating me"

    (#19 is the real PlayerX.)

  • Then we still don't know who's the real one and who's the imposter...
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

  • Couldn't you track him using his ip address and then have him banned?

You'll never know by merely looking at the names...
so appending an index is solution enough IMHO

  • There seems to be one psycho on Galts who does this. First time I encountered him, he called himself "BigCock Obama". Insulted everyone constantly (I think he must have macroed the abuse into specific keys because they flew so fast).

This guy shows up pretty often, constantly changing his name for maximum offense.I don't engage him, because I figure it just encourages his mental problem. But once, someone was getting all worked up about it, and asked why the guy was doing it.

I typed in; "Don't sweat it, this guy is just mentally ill."

So he copied my name, annoyed everyone else off the server, and when I had to step away to take a phone call, did a solo kickban on me.

    Bastard.

I would suggest that the next version of Nexuiz feature a chat mute function so we can turn off this loser and let him rant to himself. His problem is major, and it seems like enforcement techniques can be used for harassment as well as correction.

I concur. I'm in favor of unique names!

  • I am against preventing anyone to join.

Ensuring unique names is a good idea though... it would work by just adding underscores (IRC-style) or an index. Will maybe implement that, but first working on radiant.

ACTUALLY... instead of a regular index, why not just add the #playernumber to BOTH players in case of a conflict? That one is always unique.
