CTF idea- triangulation gun?

  • I was thinking about how teamplay might be improved, as well as how CTF could be made more fun.

    Tell me what you think, maybe it's a dumb idea ;P

    The idea is this: there would be a weapon which would be held by all players, and would "mark" an enemy FC. When an enemy is marked, they would show up as being somewhere along a red circle, shown on the minimap. This wouldn't be very helpful- but if three people all marked the FC, it would track the FC until the mark wore off (maybe 30 seconds), because the circles would converge at the enemy FC's location.

  • I'd have fun with this.

    However, I think it's important to note we do waypoints which already provide more accuracy... though not widely used.

    The gun would provide a solution to the less cfg savvy players.

  • If you model it, I could try to make a patch, which does what you described.

    OR, even BETTER, secondary laser fire should do THAT.

  • Nah, secondary laser create a shield imo.

    I could model it, yea. It would be less of a "gun" than a "device" though.

  • Sounds like an interesting idea. However, it shouldn't be too accurate or it will mess up the "I am behind you with your flag ke ke ke"-type fun.

    Do you think it could / should have map-dependent accuracy? I'm thinking very large maps vs. small maps (like basementctf :D ). The triangulation gun wouldn't be of much use in small maps if it's not pretty accurate.

  • Maybe it would be a pickup (instead of a starting item)? Then it could only be put on maps where it's appropriate.

    Well, it seems unlikely that it could happen now.

  • I'm still thinking it wastes weapon slot, because it has no secondary fire.

  • Wastes? We have plenty available, with recent engine changes.

    How about this- the primary fire would have to be activated by 3 people, and only those 3 people would see the player tracking. However, secondary fire could send out a blip on the radar of everyone else of the FC position (Only for a second).

    I haven't thought this through fully, I was hoping you guys might have some input.

  • Consider 3 more weapons and 20 slots will be full. Ok, nexuiz can have 32 weapons with the same flag, but currently support for 20 is coded.

    Dunno, maybe, 3 people mark would work only on rather open maps and most of them would use nex instead of marking. You probably need more opinions.

  • Lose the 3 ppl idea. if 3 ppl have a clean shot at the enemy fc and wastes it by "panting" him, they should be forced to play eyecancer with vr glasses for 3 hrs straight ;)

    How abt a tracker gun in general? Fire a projectile, if it hits something it ping's the team radar every 5 sec for 10-30 sec.

  • Self destruct would be cool. I like that idea. I don't think it should be an instakill though, maybe just a high damage super-weapon type thing.

    For example, you fire the projectile, it sticks to them, and pings radar. Then, secondary is to detonate it remotely- it would take 3 seconds to detonate, in which time the person is warned that they are tagged (so they can get away from their teammates, since the detonation would have splash).

    I'll work on the model after I meet this deadline later today.

    I meant insta kills you, the carrier of the weapon, hence 'self-destruct'. Minstanex doesn't kill yourself, it kills others :P And the self-destruct wasn't insta kills anyone in the area of effect as the damage would rapidly fade away.

    But that doesn't matter now anyway, I like torus refined idea that you can tag someone and blow him up, necessarily killing him but damaging a lot at least :)

    PS. I brought this 'self destruct' up as a joke. But if people actually likes it or have some other similar ideas (like Torus) then go for it :P

  • No, of course not. Only CTF or ONS or Assault.

    So, right now the consensus seems to be a gun which fires a projectile, which latches onto an enemy. The projectile pings the enemy's position on the team's radar, until you either fire another one (it detaches), or you right click (it explodes in a wide damage radius, powerful blast).

    The question is, how fast would the projectile be, and how would it behave? I was thinking something that moved a bit faster and straighter than the Mortar, but not as fast or straight as the laser bolt.

  • Hmm, it would be funnier if the marked person acted as a bait and you could release semi intelligent creatures (would need a model) which would go after him (like headcrabs/bugs from hl multiplayer). We already have wasps (tzork seeker) ;)

  • Your idea is good, but there is flaw in logic. If the bomb is sticked to the player, it is strange that it disappears if you mark another one.

    Bugs, crossfire and nuclear launch 8)

    Why is it strange? I suppose that's really just a matter of balancing- whether or not it stays. The other options are:

    • It could just stay on the player, and all of the would be detonated at once.

    • It could detonate if you fire another one.
