"Picking up the flag quadruples my ping!"

  • Well, I have a question about something that seems to affect players in CTF matches on public servers.

Some players seem to be terribly unlucky with their ping. Their ping shoots up and down constantly throughout the match, maybe because of other users of their network. In fact, some players seem to have specific problems on a flag run, when they need to cross a large open area, like on greatwall_reloaded or facingworlds. As they cross the open area, their ping unluckily quadruples, meaning they jerk about making them all but impossible to snipe.

Now I'm sure that this is just bad luck. But if I really wanted to have the same bad luck and be like one of these "jerks", I'm sure I could think of a way to stimulate some network traffic on demand using e.g. an OS hotkey to pause/unpause a download or something like that.

So wouldn't that be like cheating? If it is like cheating, is there maybe some way to stop it (or perhaps record if the ping changed suspiciously thoughout the match when carrying the flag)? How is this behaviour dealt with in ladder matches (or is it)?

Oh, and apologies if this has been discussed before, or you all know about this already.

    I agree.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

  • Ok, so consensus -> laggers bad. But my question was really what is *done* about it, or is it really nothing? I mean if someone went onto an ladder CTF game and started lagging each time they were mid-air with the flag, what would the consequences be (apart from presumably mockery)?

I'm getting this impression this is one of those things that everyone thinks is annoying on public servers, but nothing can be done about it (at least fairly - people really could have rubbish super varialbe connections, I suppose).

That's not how things work. When you lag, you experience a temporary loss of connection. During the delay the rest of the players will only see you standing still or moving in much less complex patterns. If you're having a problem with jolting flag carriers, check your ping. Chances are, you're the one who's lagging.

Well, its more the warping. Trying to hit someone who is stuttering around at a random rate is extremely annoying.
