Hello. I am new to Nexuiz and games in general, played Quake II way back. I have it running on Ubuntu and everything is great there. Where can I read up on basic things like the pros/cons of the different weapons available and what all the things you can run over are? Health, powerups, etc. Also, I see how to download more maps but I don't know how to switch to them. One of the basic included ones seems very limited, like it's not completed. Otherwise, lots of fun. Thanks to all involved.

How about reading the file Nexuiz/Docs/basics.html? Hmm, if you have installed it via your package manager i'm not sure though were you will find that file. You will also find it online: http://svn.icculus.org/*checkout*/nexuiz/trunk/Docs/basics.html
If you have downloaded maps they are in the data/dlcache folder were they will not be loaded after a restart for security reasons. move them from data/dlcache to just data .. then they will be used.
You will find the data folder in ~/.nexuiz/data (on linux/mac) or if someone else reads this on windows, there is usually Nexuiz/data (just were you extraced the game)

On Windows it's always backslash \.

(except when using "file:///")
