  • I find myself switching between offense and defense. It seems like most players prefer offense over defense. A lot of times, I arrive at my base and nobody is there defending it.

I think I am better at defense than offense, at least compared to most players, so I guess it works out. I'd prefer at least two on defense though.

I sometimes see multiple teammates that decide to defend the base immediately after the flag has just been taken. I'm assuming they just got killed and they decided to take a break from offense. As a result of this, I then decide to go get the flag back. The result is that I am jumping back and forth between offense and defense a lot.

Do you find yourself switching offense and defense a lot?
Do you tend to be more offensive or defensive?
Do you think offense and defense are balanced in most CTF teams?

(I thought I'd throw that last part in just to be random)

  • If another player on your team is aware of the gamemode, coordinate the positions of offense and defense.

The whole team should remain aware of the location of the flag, and ideally should be aware of all player's positions.

Like you say, I find myself starting each match on offense, and then when our side seems to be in trouble I switch to defense.

I usually tend to play offense more; the speed from laserjumping is excellent for this.

I think offense and defense are balanced in most CTF teams because there are players who prefer to snipe, those who prefer to attack, and those who just like to hide in their (or the enemy's) base and get kills, and these player types balance each other out.

Have you tried chocolate-covered coffee beans?

  • Most of the time i play defense as i just like the thrill of wasting wave after wave of attackers :P ;) But i find myself switching to offense when i have to chase the flag and end up near the enemy base and still have enough health to try to get the other flag. But i really like defense more.

And yes i observed the same thing, on most public server the defense is not very good. But then again it always seems to be that way on my team, because if defense were weak in general capturing the enemy flag should be much easier for the others :). Thats another reason why i play defense. Its just needed. And thats one of the reasons why i wrote the ctf guide in this forum: http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=849

But i had some rare very very cool matches with an very organized team, that is pure fun.

  • When I join a CTF game I usually first scout out. I check my team, go to offense and check the enemies defenses and style of play. Then I decided what is needed for my team.
I am mostly on the offense side, don't know why but it's kinda an automatisation on me that does that. But if I see that my team has problem of keeping the flag in our base I go over to defense mode.

But the thing is.. lately when I have been playing the teams literally swiches sides. The enemy goes to our base and my team is at the enemys' base. When it tends to get that way I get rid of the virus infesting our base and go over to defense.

But generally I am a flag chaser. That's kinda my main thing, if the enemy has our flag I go after him. I think the servers are generally good at balancing these positions, I from time to time see a guy calling someone a camper and such, but that's allowed in this style of play so. (Camping not insulting someone :P)

I'm generally good both offense and defense and I like em both equally. I also switch the modes if I sense I cause too much damage in either mode. Like killing wave after wave when defending, then I tend to feel sorry for the guys who never can get the flag so I switch and hope that at least they capture it :P Though then I would have been in their base and killing the flag carrier. But perhaps their moral have risen a bit :P lool

Same thing applies if I captured the flag too many times or killed them in their own base a lot of times, then I let myself get killed heheh.

  • "it is not the responsibility of the defender to leave the objective unguarded just so his opponent sucks less"

    OMG, That is hilarious!!!!
    :D

ai, yeah I notice that as well recently that at a certain point in a game, the teams will be completely switched where the red team is in the blue base and vice versa. Very strange. I see the value in this...being that whichever team dominates the other team's base ends up with an advantage for a few minutes. Soon after that, I notice that a lot of the teams ends up on defense for a while as they realize they die as soon as they respawn in their own base.

As I'm getting better at using the Nex, I do find myself chasing the flag a lot as well, which pulls me off defense.

Ya know, I tried one of those frozen bananas dipped in chocolate before...and I was surprised that I did not enjoy it. i like bananas, and I like chocolate. Go figure.

Well i was told a few times that i was camping and my only response was that i'm defending the flag. I should use that text the next time :).
But i also switch to offense then IF there is at least someone acting like he could defend the flag instead of me :)

Oh btw.. binded a key too. First I thought I wouldn't have any use of it but turns out I just might.

I agree that defending isnt camping, but its another matther when you are playing 5 to 2 and three of the 5 are glued to the top of the nexface towers at all times.

Well such unbalanced games were already dissed as bad and if people play dirty like this its even worse. But in general defending is not camping and when the teams are balanced you can just attack with as many guys as there are defenders on the other team.. Hmm somehow the image of a one-on-one close range combat comes to mind :)
