Preferred resolution: 1440*900, 32-bit
What should I do to maximize performance? Is there a list of general tips I could use, saving everyone time?

try lowering your screen rez. Also if you use nexuiz or nexuiz-sdl you may get better results with one or the other. Lastly, I'd suggest experementing with effects one day to see what you can work with. Turn "show FPS" on, and then play with the effects untill the minimum framerate you would get is 30.

And well, wait for new updates, so far each of them got a bit faster.. though some of those speedups were eaten away be eye candy updates as well

And a little suggestion... get 1GB of ram or more for your mac. Mac OSX will benefit from it a lot, you will see the difference.
