  • I've searched but I can't find how to limit my fps in Nexuz without using vsync.

  • open the console (shift-esc) and type
    Code: Select all
    cl_maxfps 120

to limit your fps. replace 120 with the max fps you want.

<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along

Why would you want to limit FPS other than by using vsync? Unless your card does not have triple buffering there is no point in doing this.

  • Thank you for the quick response.

vsync is known to cause input lag and I also don't want to limit my fps that low. A stable fps is always better than a crazy one.

Does it really lag input? I haven't heard that before. Can someone confirm this?

Btw, if your fps is faster that your refresh rate, what good does that do? You can't see the frames faster than your screen can show them.

  • vsync for sure puts a bit of latency on the *output*. After all the GPU cannot just pump out a new frame ASAP but will have to sync for the video timing.

I play with vsync off (actually, I think vsync doesn't really work here at all with that ATI driver) and have cl_maxfps at 63. The refresh rate is 60 Hz and thanks to the framerate nailed at slightly above that the tearing will for my setup "distribute" nicely among frames (if one would set cl_maxfps to 60 the tearing would slowly drift across the screen as timing gets skewed, which is horrible).

  • As far as i get it only vsync on and trible buffering can lead to slight lag.. as Savage said output lag which should be below 5ms.. but some people can feel it neverthe less.

vsync on and double buffering should not give lag but can lead to jumps in FPS if your card does not manage to output more the vsync fps..

and then again vsync off has none of the two but will show ugly tearing.

So what is best really depends on the person playing and what he preferes

  • I tried without vsync and I just can't get past the tearing (which is strange, because I never noticed it before on my old computer... maybe because the fps almost never got past the refresh rate :P ).

I'm not really sure how to tell if there's noticeable lag... aim would be the best indicator, but as I'm incapable of aiming, I'm left without an indicator.

  • Year tearing should be much more visiable the more fps you get as then the image output to the monitor changes more often.
The lag from trible buffering should really be hardly noticable.. the more fps you have the less lag there is.

  • From what I experienced, vsync is barely usable. However, there are players who don't notice any lags and like the vsync feature.

Tearing strongly depends on the display you use. I currently have 4 different displays. My old Syncmaster 940B isn't tearing at all. At any fps count. Same for my Syncmaster 740N. My Syncmaster 943B gives me tearing in a way that doesn't annoy me at all, while my Syncmaster 206BW is just freaking horrible!

In my company we have some PVA displays, such as FSC P19, some EIZO 22" and some Syncmaster 214T. Even though PVAs are not very fast (or just for that reason???), they don't show any tearing effects.

  • My refresh rate is set to 85hz. The screen is an acer something or other. Works perfectly.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.
