Jerky movement/gameplay

Tips on how to tweak Nexuiz for the best performance

  • Hello guys. I just discovered your neat little game today when surfing around and I installed it. I like it but I have a few problems. My game is running kind of "jerkily". I saw another thread about this where it was fixed by running the SDL exe but that didn't solve it. I also removed client movement prediction. The jerkiness occurs both offline and online. It feels really weird to move around. It's not a question of FPS cause my computer is good. It feels kind of like I have a high ping in a crappy netcode enviroment. I watched the Octobre vid where the game looks really smooth (and fun!) so I know it shouldn't be like this. Here are my specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 stock
    4096MB OCZ Reaper 1066MHz
    Nvidia 8800GTS 512
    Win Vista Ultimate x64

    Other questions:

My gamma is increased in Windows after playing the game, how do I fix this?
    Can you get brightmodels?
Are there any like crucial cfg-lines I should use, like in QW they had independentphysics and physfps.

    Thanks

  • For the gamma problem, check "use GLSL to handle color control" in the video menu.

For the jerkiness, try to have first good settings locally, so we can be sure it's not your connexion. Better to enable client movement prediction, after use vertical synchronization (vid_vsyn) or cl_maxfps 60/120/etc. to keep your framerate stable. And then increase cl_netfps from 20 to 60 or a little more.

About brighmodels, it's a server settings only, you can sometimes get it by vote (vhelp).

P.S. Welcome nxc, good luck and have fun. :)

  • I tried installing the latest beta version of 2.5 and it feels better. I like playing picmiped in DM games and therefore I change the graphics settings. Stock graphics feel better but look annoying (too much stuff :P) and when I change the settings the game starts feeling jerkily, but I don't know which one. Anyway last night I got a pretty good setup but it still doesn't feel "smooth" (note: It doesn't really feel smooth at stock settings either, perhaps a little better tho). Maybe it's just that the physics engine is different than what i'm used to (Quake3 w/ mods & Qlive). I'll try some more after work today with the settings you mentioned.

Thanks for the welcome btw ;) I have an additional question; is it possible to picmip only map/models. I like gl_picmip 10 cause I have better visibility, but I don't like the way the weaponmodels look and the muzzleflash really stands out in high picmip. Thanks again :)

  • Regarding the jerkyness.. are you sure you have 'proper' drivers installed? Or could it be the basic driver which was installed with windows is still installed? Those suck at opengl which this game uses. Try to install the latest driver from nvidia.com..
I have a 8800m gtx and Nexuiz is running fine on linux :P

  • Hehe yeah I have the latest drivers (reformatted a few weeks ago, went back to Vista again after trying XP x64). Now when I got my Aspire One 150 (nice little toy :D ) I tried ubuntu dual boot on it and really like it so I'm going to install it on my main PC today aswell and see if the performance gets any better. Had problems with gfx on my netbook tho, but googling it showed that apparently the linux drivers for Intel Integrated Gfx drivers suck so I'm gonna try running Nexuiz on my XP install and optimizing it so I can play ultra-portable ;)

Sorry for rambling, bored at work :P I'll keep you posted on how this works out

  • Turning vsync on made the game feel smooth. Then I couldn't turn it off, restarted. Felt jerky again. Turned on vsync -> still jerky. Tried netfps and maxfps a bit but didn't feel good anyway. Couldn't force Hz to 75 (vid_refreshrate 75), FPS stayed on 60 >.< (maxfps wasn't on 60, vsync on). It just doesn't feel right :?. If you got any solutions I'd love to hear them. If you can upload a config that feels good for you that would be great too.

  • max fps = 60 (your screen real refresh rate), netfps = 1/server ticrate = 20

I get jerky movement but only on svn servers, but you seem to get it even playing locally. Seems strange. Btw, is your fps rate stable or jumping up and down randomly?

  • I'm running in 1024x768, where my monitor can handle 75 hz. But in-game it remains at 60 despite vid_refreshrate 75. My fps does go up and down between like 100-600 but setting maxfps to 60 or 100 or wherever it's stable has no effect. BTW what is SVN and can I change my local server ticrate to see if it has any effect?

  • iirc on windows the vid-mode selection is kinda stupid so maybe the game pickes a vid-mode with just 60hz.. but there is the variable vid_refreshrate that you can set to 75 and it should then select the right vid-mode..
You need to either restart or do a vid_restart afterwards

  • nxc ,
I have an integrated video card . it is an Nvidia 6100 on a gateway machine i bought about 4 years ago . i use 800x640 resolution for the game and i also use a nice cfg file when playing serious games calle n_low.cfg and evrything is smooth you might try it here http://grasshopper.nexuizninjaz.com/n_low.cfg to use it , place it in your data folder then open your console and type ( exec n_low.cfg / enter / type , vid_restart ) maybe this will help narrow some problems down . good luck and welcome to nexuiz .
Master ? Do you call me Grasshopper because I am cunning and stealthy?
