    ASUS K8N
    ASUS N6600
    CORSAIR DDR2 PC 3200 2x512MB
    SOUNDBLASTER LIVE! 1024

In Quake 3, I can play at the highest quality (resolution: 800x600), and I get no FPS drop. 200 FPS.

In Nexuiz, with the lowest quality possible, at the same resolution, I got many FPS drops. Sometimes I got 300FPS, sometimes just about 50!
In fact, it depends where I am on the map.
So I think the maps are not well optimized.

  • yes i think it depends on the polygons number which are drawed by the engine. but as nexuiz is an opensource game, for sure it is not as much optimized as a commercial one. ;)
But the fps variation due to the number of drawed polys is really less noticeable in the new maps (at least for me)

i also noticed (for me once again) that the displayed resolution has almost no effect on the fps count (nexuiz runs the same for me in 800x600 and in 1280x1024)

    particle quality 0.5
    decals on
    bloom and hdr off
    coronas on

    offsettmapping off
reltime world light & shadows off
dynamic light on, dyn light shadows off
    opengl 2.0 shaders on
    gloss on

    fps:
    always enougth.
75 strainght, thats my cl_maxfps. some very few times if can go down to ~50 but thats extreamly rare.

    some tips:
use the cvar cl_maxfps. thres no point in having mutch more fps then you sreens refresh rate, and a big drop is framerate is usualy more noticable then a generaly lower fps.

if i turn hw gamma on my framerate drop to 20-ish. i am running windows with a dual screen setup, hw gamma dont work on windows w dual screens. hw gamma is on by default afaik. so if you are on windows dual screens, be sure to turn this option off. (its under the color control tab).

The lack of gamma in cases like mine can be somewhat made up for with the cvar "r_hdr_screenbrughtness" 1 = normal, 2 = bright, 0.5 = dark. its not as good in making teh visibility better as hwgamma but it helps.

All special effects except gloss, coronas and decals are off. GL 2.0 is off too. Textures best, af 8x.

I've got about 60-200 fps. Usually around 80. Perfect for online play.

  • CPU: Pentium M 760 (2 GHz)
RAM: 1 GB of dellram that gets really hot (in the 90's, it's on top of the video card, everything is smashed together in laptops and the memory really has no way of being cooled)
HD: 74GB 5400RPM (upgraded from 4200RPM, but still slow)
Video Card: ATI 128 MB Mobility Radeon X300 (297/216 MHz) (I might as well use integrated graphics, this card is terrible and cannot be removed from the laptop without fire)

Get about 3x better performance under windows xp using the Omega Drivers than under Ubuntu 7.04 using fglrx, but the input is much more responsive under Linux.

for those who are posting Hard Drive capacities and not speeds, you might as well post your printers too. I have a Lexmark z615 colour photo printer, rebranded as a Dell Photo Printer 720

  • HP Pavillion ZD7000
    http://reviews.cnet.com/HP_Pavilion_zd7 ... 57633.html

    Laptop with a 17" widescreen
3.2GHz desktop Pentium 4 (yes, a desktop chip in a laptop)
    512MB of 333MHz memory
    AGP 8X GeForce FX Go5600 w/ 128 MB RAM

I'm running Windows XP home on it (came with it). I tried Ubuntu and Suse but I couldn't get the wireless adapter working, and the video driver had low color settings. I'm not linux-savvy enough to fix those problems. I haven't tried installing Linux in about a year, so perhaps there are better drivers available now. (if anyone wants to help me with this, lte me know :-p)

It's a great laptop, but it has a desktop chip in it. Often, the thing overheats and starts acting flaky. I start experiencing strange screen-jerking lag that isn't caused by my ping time. It's frustrating at times.

I'm also on a wireless LAN where I live, which sometimes drops as well.

My video settings are the lowest that you can go, with brightness set very high.

I took the "low" config here...
    http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?p=90#90

and added these config settings to brighten my screen...

    set "v_hwgamma" "1"
    set "v_gamma" "2"
    set "v_brightness" "0"
    set "v_contrast" "1"

I created a nexuiz.bat file to launch nexuiz with my config automatically

    nexuiz +exec my.cfg

What I need now is to setup some bindings for communicating with my team for CTF. I'll do that soon.

  • I do this in the same way as i like to have more control then just autoexec.cfg which one could also use but that is exec'd every time Nexuiz does start.
I have posted my config a few times in this forum if you need some examples :)

  • I read someone's config for CTF communication somewhere else on the forum. I'm going to use that as a basis for my own. What i'm going to do though is try to minimize the wording as much as possible on the say_team bindings. I'll post what I come up with.

  • Maybe that was my 'team communication' thread in the gameplay subforum :) http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=555

Well my first try was to also use as few (and also short) words as possible but then it can get hard for beginners to get what you what. Sometimes i even think that my "attacking" is missunderstood by some. I just want to tell that i'm attacking now but i get the impression some think they should join the attack as i find the base empty when returning.. sometimes empty of my own flag to :)

    Lol, good point :)
Both harddrives are running at 7200 rpm, although the external one doesn't profit from the higher speed, a 5400rpm hdd would be just as fast.

According to HD Tach my internal 200 GB Maxtor, 7200rpm, 2MB cache has a default access rate of 13.6ms and a read burst speed of 83.5 MB/sec.
The external Samsung 160 GB, 7200rpm, 2MB cache has an access speed of 14ms, but only a read burst speed of 25.7MB/sec.

    Hope your satisfied now :D:

Oh and by the way, I use an Epson Stylus C64 inkjet printer along with a Canon Selphy CP500 photo-printer

    Edit:
And before I forget, my Ram's are running at cl 2.5.

  • Athlon XP 2400+
    512 MB DDR 333 MHz
    GeForce 6200, a bit overclocked
    Ubuntu 7.04

Glowing, coronas, vertex, particles 1.0, gl 2.0 shaders, picmip 0 (full textures), anizo 8x, the rest is off.

With 800x600 resolution I have 65 to even 180 fps (depending on map and bot count). You will probably ask, why don't I switch to 1024x768? Because then, on some maps with 3+ players I get 40-45 fps, what is hardly unacceptable value.

Advanced effects such as deluxe+offset mapping, real time lighting, hdr or bloom costs too many fps for me so i don't use it (and game looks good too).

  • Hi Folks

    My Computer:

    AMD Athlon XP 1900+
    512 MB RAM
    GeForce FX 5200
    60 GB HDD
Epson Stylus DX4800 (Yeah, i got a printer)

    Settings:

    As low as possible
    Resolution: 1024x768

    OS: SuSE 10.2

If u are a linux user, i can recommend FVWM-Crystal.

This helps A LOT for FPS, especially on old computers.

FVWM isn´t as fat as KDE or GNOME, but i can run the stuff i want on it. Looks ugly, but will your Nexuiz (or your Framerate) look better.

    Greetz Joe

(Puh, hope i´d ride my first post out  )
