Trying to get 60+ FPS on NV GeForce 9800 GT.

Tips on how to tweak Nexuiz for the best performance

Moderators: Nexuiz Moderators, Moderators

  • Hi all. I can't play a game well unless I get 60+ FPS. In Nexuiz, I often get lower than 30, especially when there are decals all over the place. On some custom maps, the game absolutely dies. I've tried everywhere from "utlimate" settings to "normal". Do I really have to decrease details even more to get that FPS with this card? Using both Windows and GNU/Linux, with various drivers.

  • Try disabling gibs. With 2.5.2 gibs cause huge performance drops.

    Also reflective water.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

Iirc water is disabled by default on 2.5.2. Or lemme say replaced by error messages

Somehow I'm missing information about the rest of your system specs. Are you using an old single core CPU?

  • Sorry, here's the specs I know about:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0 GHz
    RAM: 2 GB
Sound: Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 512 MB
    Monitor: Acer wide-screen LCD 1440x900 @ 60 Hz

I turned off reflections, and now water is just ugly white space.

  • Yes, because 2.5.2 water is bugged.

  • It could be very useful to disable lightmaps instead of reflections.

  • A 9800 GT should be able to handle higher settings just fine. I usually get 150-200 fps on my Nvidia 9500 GS with the "medium" preset. (Arch Linux, latest Nvidia drivers)

Depending on the count of players, and the map itsself of course.

node357, I'd like you to try following:

Choose 'Demos' in the menue. Choose demo1 in the list and press the button 'Timedemo'.

After it's finished, you are shown the results that way:

    Code: Select all
    date 2009-11-28 18:44:58 | enginedate 02:52:53 Oct  1 2009 9271 release | demo demos/demo1.dem | commandline G:\Nexuiz252\Nexuiz\nexuiz.exe -mygames  | result 1910 frames 14.4620000 seconds 132.0702531 fps, one-second fps min/avg/max: 101 137 250 (90 seconds)

This result is saved in the file benchmark.log which you can find in Nexuiz' data folder. I'd like to see the result you get with your rig.

  • Nothing like watching Nexuiz in fast-forward!
    Code: Select all
    date 2009-11-28 13:56:18 | enginedate 02:52:53 Oct  1 2009 9271 release | demo demos/demo1.dem | commandline C:\games\Nexuiz\nexuiz.exe  | result 1910 frames 14.3160000 seconds 133.4171556 fps, one-second fps min/avg/max: 75 144 375 (90 seconds)

I can pretty much understand these results, but they don't seem to represent my actual experience when playing the game with like eight people on a lot of maps. :(

  • Well, if you compare my result with yours you can see that my fps are quite stable throughout the whole game, while yours show extreme differences between min and avg (and the max ones as well).

I assume you still have gibs enabled, and this is what probably causes your framedrops. So just disable them. They're useless anyway, unless you are a great splatter fan.

You can find that point in the 'Player Setup' menue (at the bottom, right side)

  • The things I try first are: disbling HDR, dropping the particle quality to 20, 16 bit color (max your res, and saturate the color a little and you won't notice a visual difference), setting reflections to good or lower, and I reduce the gib time.

  • There is something *horribly* wrong if you need to use 16 bit color just to get to 60 fps on that card.

<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"

<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along

Actually I can almost max the game and get good fps. I was just saying what I would modify first to get better performance, though I do play on 16 bit color since I can't tell the difference between that and 32 bit if I saturate it a tiny bit and I keep my fps capped at 46 since that is smooth enough for me and it would be extremely hard to throw the game off when it's capped that low.

  • This is why I use 16 bit color:

    32 bit

    16 bit

    16 bit with .05 over-saturation
