mod system?

  • I started getting into modding, and I know all you need to do is get a pk3 file put the stuff in it, and drop it into the data folder, but wouldn't it be neat if we had a system that we could have pk3s for mods in the root folder, and then all we would need to do is add a menu that will open up the pk3s that we want. In/with the pk3s there would be an XML file with a name, and description.

    What do you think?

  • Actually its already quite simple.. if you just ADD stuff or change game logic (code changes) just put your pk3 file into Nexuiz/data. For code changes make sure your progs.dat is NOT called that but something different and then use a file SOME_NAME.modinfo that contains the name of renamed progs.dat and what mod name should be displayed in the mod selection dialog in Nexuiz (somewere in the 'create' game dlg unless i'm mistaken). Just take a look at nexuiz.modinfo

    For mods that overwrite stuff normally one create Nexuiz/MODNAME folder and starts Nexuiz like nexuiz -game MODNAME. For this there is currently no support in Nexuiz but with the latest engine changes it might even be possible.

    So i just do not see a need for some petition or anything.. the mod system already works mostly well except for menu support for that second thing which is more common with other quake based titles. As most mods might want to change the menu however i think this is really needed but i'm not totaly sure at the moment if thats easy.

  • however you can't make something like GMOD that way, I was thinking something like valve's source SDK.

    EDIT: with the menu thing, what if you just want to add another button instead of remaking the entire menu? that kind of thing should be added too.

    I have no idea what you mean with gmod..
    no the way the menu works you have to replace files to add stuff.. The menu is part code and an other part are lots of .menu files that are parsed to create the menu ui. You have to at least replace some basic files that make up the main menu and add your new button.
