  • Nexuiz currently has 9 background songs. Half of them (to me, anyway) seem boring for a fast paced deathmatch game. So, I was thinking maybe we could get some people to make some music for the project.

Brendan Becker (AKA The Green Zebra) did the original code for pydance, and he did some songs for it. I like them, but plugging what he's done already would not fit the game. Maybe we could get him to do some more appropriate themed music.

Anyone else who can write songs and has access to a synthesizer, and wants to help should contact vermeulen after they are finished with the songs, I'm sure he'd be ok about adding it in, but wait until he/someone else on the team replies here giving us the "ok".

  • I think we need a tracker composer for Nexuiz. That way we'll have both binary (ogg) and source (mod, it, s3m, xm, etc)

AS I've repeated to deaath.. The GPL cannot be directly applied to data, so this is totally unnessesary. Why would we need the "Source" to the data content. And what about the samples in the mod, do you need the "sources" for them too, where is the limit?= This would seriously limit any composer that wasnts to use real-worl equipment to make the music.

    makes no sense

  • Well if you do not have sources you can not make them available.. i understand the GPL not like you HAVE to have sources.. only if there are some. Anything else would be quite strange.
There was someone allowing us to use some of his music. He talked to divVerent on irc but i was not there at the time and just quickly skipped over the lines in my irc log. I think divVerent said a few of those songs are too similar but maybe he can add here what the outcome of this was.

  • Well, in case of "real world" music, what's the source is obvious - a score. Even if it's a PDF or a GIF.

That "compiling" that is "playing" the score won't always sound the same doesn't matter - the same holds for source code in C. Depending on the compiler or time or flags or moon phase, it will produce different output that's just "similar".

However, I am not sure if the GPL fully applies to music AT ALL. But if it does, a score would be the perfect way to fulfill it. Given that music can be improvisation (which by definition has no "source"), it shouldn't be needed to provide source for music at ALL...

same goes for textures, BTW, which are in the seldomst cases generated by algorithms, but usually created by user interaction with a graphics program.

So... provide a source if you can, but I doubt you're really required to. It would however fit well with the free software spirit and give a good example. Still, I think what the GPL on music really results in is the infectious character of the GPL (may only be included in GPLed bundles) and free redistribution and editing (like BSD license).
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Regardless of ig gpl requiers it or not, sources for as mutch media as possible would undoubtedly make things a little smoother for anyone interestind in produsing new media based on some music/texture/model.

The bad part is ofc the huge overhead this would be on the release. For example a 256x256 multilayer texture can hunk 5-10 megs of storage before colapsed and jpg compressed unto a few k (and this is why i never ship my texture sources in pk2's) . So perhaps a online source archive would be a good idea?

  • Are there any open (or even public domain) sound archives online?

  • There are some tracks on elysis.de (the composer of all nexuiz songs except for the main theme) that aren't included in the game but feel like they should be. I have several downloaded and play them instead of the default on some maps. Summoning in particular goes great with Annuerism (if I have the right map name - it was nexdm09 in the old days).

Also - this isn't development related as this isn't free music - but the soundtrack to La Nouba makes for kickass fragging music.
