  • Hi,

my name is Timo Stripf and i'm developer of HLSW (www.hlsw.net). I like to integrate Nexius into HLSW and to make everything as simple as possible for my users i try to detect new installed games by looking for some predefined registry keys containing the installation path of one game.

I installed Nexius and since it has no installation program there exists no registry key containing the installation path.

So i ask myself if you could write the path of nexiuz.exe to registry every time nexiuz is started?

    Best regards
    Timo Stripf

  • IIt would be technically possible, but I'm quite sure that you will never convince the devs to do that.

Why not just said people need to have it in C:\Nexuiz\ if not HLSW wont have nexuiz, thats how there is "homemade" support for nexuiz and xfire :)

  • Hi Timo.

Welcome to Nexuiz and the Forum.

Its nice to see interest in Nexuiz by HLSW but i'm not sure if that registry thing is a good idea. When should that entry be removed again? HLSW would still show Nexuiz although it might long be removed. Sure you could check if you find the binary but then there would still be that remaining registry entry. And deleting it again when the game is shutdown would probably not help HLSW at all. Though i try to avoid windows i do not want to dump stuff on other persons computers :)
Do you really just check for registry settings? It seems nexuiz would be the first game 'without a real' installation program. Maybe it will not be the last. How about looking in some default places for nexuiz.exe like cyan suggested? Its not perfect but at least a start and having HLSW users enter a location for a game is not that hard. I have to do it for XQF for each game i want to use with it.

Well maybe others have different opinions this was just my own personal opinion!!

I still think it would be neat to have a small application for windows users that can download or use a local nexuiz zip file, unpack it and create startmenu entries and that could also be used to create registry entries like you want them. That way the nexuiz zip file can still be system independent and it will allow windows users their usual installation.

  • I was a long time windows user, so I realy ask, what on earth is hard about:
1.: extracting a zip (ok, it's hard for some, but the first time you make it, you learn it).
2.: making icons on your desktop?
3.: if you have some kinda launcher app, use a "browse for exe" button? (if someone can find it's documents in the Documents and settings (sic!) folder)?
"One should strive to achieve; not sit in bitter regret."
    WE ARE NEXUIZ.

It is not the only game without registry entry but it is the first game i saw without it for years.
Deleting the registry entry is not neccessary since HLSW do not remove games if the registry entry is removed.

It is true that users can enter the game path manually. It is only a way to make using of Nexiuz more comfortable. Every windows game server browser i know uses this method to detect new games ... so this is not only HLSW related.

Another idea would be using an installer for nexiuz. It is done in several hours. I use http://www.jrsoftware.org/ ... it is simple and working.

  • One advantage of an installer would be making the download smaller by using more powerful compression. You would replace the pk3's with just a tree of files so that you can take advantage of solid archiving.

I don't really use Windows any more so I don't care about it from a use point but it would be an interesting experiment to do. Tinynex is currently out of date but I think a 40Mb Tinynex would be possible by using a self extracting installer.
