  • Obi: So do I get this straight? This only happens online, right ? Playing on a "Create Game" listenserver is fine?

If not, something else is wrong, and that would be your FPS/Graphics card

  • Esteel, Green,

    - I once more installed version 2.3 in a clean directory
    - I created a public server (no other players) and had a frame rate between 100-150 (standard video settings, did not change a thing)
    - I joined a RBI server, and as soon as a few players are on the screen, frame rate drops to 30-40
    - Created a public server (with 8 bots) and had severe frame rate drops till 35 fps
    - Tried the same (8 bots) with 2.2.3 only drops to +- 65 fps

    I have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro running w2k. AMD Athlon64 3500+, 1 GIG RAM

Yesterday I thought that it was network related, but now it seems that I have problems with rendering the player models? Something changed related to them?

  • trying another mod_q3bsp_lightmapmergepower could be worth a try too. default is 4 iirc. It combines the small 128x128 q3bsp lightmaps into larger maps. 4 = 2048x2048. trying 1-3 may be a good idea.
    HOF:
<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along
    <Samua>]Idea: Fix it? :D
<Samua>Lies, that only applies to other people.

  • mod_q3bsp_lightmapmergepower 3 is default.. 4 is default in darkplaces, we lowered it in Nexuiz to help cards with low gfx memory already. Even lower settings should not help but as we are out of ideas its worth trying never the less.

I asked urmel to test gl_vbo 0;gl_lockarrays 0; mod_q3bsp_lightmapmergepower 1; r_cullentities_trace 0; vid_restart .. that should restore about all changed variables to 2.2.3 defaults but he said it did not change a bit for him. But please try and see if it changes anything for you..

Well there were some furtger changes to the rendering parts, maybe divVerent can make new engine builds so you two can test if those help..

  • Esteel,

Setting gl_vbo 0 seems to work: playing on the RBI server is now possible (when I scared them away) stood still and watched the FPS: 360. Setting gl_vbo back to 1: FPS 60.

At first sight its playable again for me.

    Thx very much!!!!

  • Obi[BE]: Interesting.. how much memory does your graphic card have? VBOs should add a few megabyte and LordHavoc thinks it might be too much then for your graphic card..
If its really the graphic memory trying gl_picmip 5 should reduce gfx memory usage enough to make gl_vbo 1 work. Can you please test that? If so changes from today might help. (reduced gfx memory usage A LOT)

Oh which graphic card do you have?

Can I ask a question? What are VBOs?

Edit, Also what is the default of gl_picmip 5?

  • Well, I started my testing phase yesterday and had some support from esteel then (thenx!).

My Hardware: Intel E4300@2.1GHz, 2gigs RAM, GF7600GT/256MB PCIe

First I was playing on 2 public servers with mid.cfg and gibs enabled. Performance was really awful. I had about 35fps and that sucked. A short visit on an RBI server (populated by one bot) wasn't better. After a few settings which I don't remember exactly I ran around on the DCC 1on1 server and compared it to my 2.23 version with the same graphics settings.

Okay, performance boost is something different, the new version is rather a little slower in performance. Not very pleasant, but, so what, I don't suffer performance problems anyway.

Another thing is problems with the internet connection. I somehow feel that the gameplay is much better now, as there weren't any noticeable lags anymore. Hell YEAH! :D

Another thing: As it seems, I don't have to disable one of the two CPU cores anymore. Okay, I'm not so sure yet.

I hope I can try the new version at noon on my company PC which is weaker than the one at home and has a much worse internet connection quality. I'm all on edge :)

Yes, there were larger engine improvements in this respect.

THAT, however, can't be - there were no changes about that. Maybe a system update fixed that?
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Nopez - I switched between the two versions all the time. Might be just by accident, but maybe the new version just calls my system more to duty, so, we'll see

  • Maybe r_cullentities_trace eats some more CPU and "fixes" that :P

VBO = vertex buffer objects, that feature is now used in the new release to speed up rendering.
Default for gl_picmip is 0 in the engine and (currently) 1 in Nexuiz to lower texture usage a bit. But with the HUGE memory savings from yesterday we also use 0 in the next beta for the default settings.

As mentionned ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, 128 MB RAM.
I have just upgraded my ATI drivers (from version 6.2 to 7.2) and now things are better, even with gl_vbo 1. However, it was still choppy playing online. Setting cl_movement_minping to 10 made things better. So the current state is that 2.3 is playable, but still not as good as 2.2.3.

  • Yesterday i was able to test the new beta (or alpha?) version online. It did run very smooth. No lags. Not even in full games. I am quite impressed.

I hope 2.3 will be released soon.

Good work, you nice developers! :D

  • there seems to be a problem with looping world sounds in this test version. at first i thought it was a radiant problem, and then i tried loading the same bsp file into 2.2.3 and the sounds worked again.

if you are aware of it and have a corrected test version, please upload...

i'm compiling all of my maps into a single map pack PK3, and getting it ready to release in sync with the 2.3 release of nexuiz.

70MM13_13 (my final map) will require nexuiz 2.3 to work, it is very shader intensive.

PS: it would be great if you also enabled crushing damage from lifts and plats and func_rotating! there is a warning sign on 70mm13_05 that is lying right now :P

    thanks

I'm not aware of problems with looping world sounds, can we see the map were it has problems?

The latter should also work, but you might need to set damage values for the crushers.

    Code: Select all
    /*QUAKED func_rotating (0 .5 .8) ? - - X_AXIS Y_AXIS
Brush model that spins in place on one axis (default Z).
speed   : speed to rotate (in degrees per second)
noise   : path/name of looping .wav file to play.
dmg     : Do this mutch dmg every .dmgtime intervall when blocked
    dmgtime : See above.

Are you sure that all your cfg files are in the data directory of 2.3? Do your other settings and binds work the way they should?

No need to.. on Mac and Linux data is also read and stored from ~/.nexuiz/data which he has.

  • I haven't played with 2.3 too much yet, but I must say it looks nice so far. Thanks to the performance improvements I am FINALLY able to play with every setting on/at full with a decent frame rate (I run the game with a Geforce 7900GS). Granted, some levels get better frame rates than others (Basement seems to get poor performance in every version, but it's getting better.) The Nex especially looks awesome with its gloss.

One thing though, is there a way to turn off the "TESTING ONLY" text in the corner? It's hard to read chat messages in the lower-left corner with that text constantly on top.

P.S. I notice the occasional "outlines" mentioned earlier, most notably on the electro.

  • Just a quick question.
Does 2.3 support mutithreading outside of MacOSX or has this feature been included in the past.
If so, what is the command to enable/disable it.
I want to test something out and see how much mutithreading evens out the driver issues and GPU overload.

    Thanks.
