  • geez, I almost forgot to post a problem I have here on my company PC:

when I open the console, I can hardly type any commands as my [space] key isn't recognized as such. Just happening on this one here, not at home, and I've no idea what's the reason. Silly me, I didn't tell my colleague next to me to try...

Couldn't find out exactly but I think it acts like a tab key or the [esc]. Quite funny. Nevertheless, I'm running the download of the new version now and I'm gonna have a try in about an hour when work is done

    EDIT:
    Code: Select all
    bind "SPACE" "toggleconsole"
seems to be the problem, but only in the versions newer than 2.23 :? and now I know why I don't have that problem at home. I don't even know how that bind came into my config...

  • I do not know what I shall do now: I already have a sv_curl_defaulturl defined so that clients are able to download custom maps. What shall I do now with it?

  • Wow, this is a very bad release for me now.

In general, FPS have decreased. I did a timedemo for a selfcreated listenserver demo with 9 bots on aggressor. Results:
    Nex v2.3 beta1:
    result 2533 frames 10.0960000 seconds 250.8914422 fps, one-second min/avg/max: 179 251 360

    Nex v2.3 beta2:
    result 2533 frames 13.6870000 seconds 185.0661211 fps, one-second min/avg/max: 125 185 210

div0: NO, I'm not that stupid. I did "r_picmipworld 1". Other than that, all settings are the same (copied config/autoexec file)

Spawnsounds are very bad too, since they are the same as the teleporter sound, which is really confusing. Either another sound, or disable it by default pls.

AH, and btw: tdem demo1 -> Nexuiz crashes after half a sec of playing the demo.

Systemspecs: P4 3.2 Ghz, 1 GB Ram, ATI x850 Pro
Nex settings for benchmarking/playing: very low settings in general, gl_picmip 4, gl_vbo 1

Either mirror waypointsprites-0.6.pk3 or use a curl_urls.txt file as described in Nexuiz/Docs/mapdownload.txt ;)

  • Oh, by the way: If this test release happens to be slower than the previous one you may want to try to toy around with the new r_depthtest cvar (valid values 0, 1 and 2).

    edit: I mean r_depthfirst

  • r_depthtest 0/1/2 combined with r_restart doesn't yield any improvements!

    there is no cvar r_depthtest, it's r_depthfirst

  • Guys, I am able to use autocompletion. You are right, it's called r_depthfirst, but what I did was to enter "r_dep<tab" and set the values for it, without further looking at it because there was only one matching variable.

and as you might probably already guess, "r_depthfirst" didn't yield any improvements, since this was the cvar I was testing.

esteel wrote:but normal people should never need that variable

yeah, sorry for not being normal

And what suggestions do you have to fix the "tdem demo1" ending in a total crash of Nexuiz ?

  • I've had some weird graphics corruption with this version on higher settings running under Linux. Will try and get some more useful description.

  • my issues with FPS were resolved! It was r_bloom being enabled because the normal.cfg changed that value to 1! So be aware to switch it off again if you upgrade and reuse your old configs

UPDATE: there are, unfortunatly, still issues. Maps like faacing worlds have a major performance drop (at times even only 50% FPS): I found out that revision 7154 is the one that is slow, 7153 is still fast for me. I wote that to LordHavoc

  • Well thats why i keep my own high and low config files, the ones in Nexuiz can change.. noone ever said they will stay like they were in old versions and indeed it was tried to make them looking as good as possible even at lower settings. For example lower settings now use r_flashblend to create fake lights on rockets and explosions which looks nice but can be quite annoying for 'real' playing.. My lowconfig in the Nexuiz - Performance forum tries to keep it down to really low settings for those that 'need' it :)

It's gl_flashblend. And I really want that to be zero on all cfg's or 1 only on the higher presets cfg's. And low.cfg user normal picmip... it should use lowest picmip.

And for those poor souls that like that effect can enable it. And we should also add that effect to the menu.

  • why the !@#$% should low.cfg use even lower picmip? Even in default settings Nexuiz uses around 128mb graphics ram now in 2.3.. Cards with even less memory should in general have slight problems and i think in 2.3 low.cfg requires only 70mb of graphics ram which should be available on all powerful enough cards..

  • well, 70MB is exactly 6MB more than most of the many Geforce2 users and Laptop owners have and iirc this is what those cards have available, no? Correct me pleasre if I'm wrong.

Maybe that's why the !@#$% low.cfg should use lower picmip.

  • well, I don't really need, for I got meself ah GF8600GTS today eh eheh

Just trying to understand esteel's "why the !@#$%" reaction, I could be completely misunderstanding the whole discussion.

But I'd like to have it anyway, to test it on my Dell lappy with that old 64MB Radeon 9000 mobile. Just to show it to other ppl for advertize :)

Back to topic, is that correct: if 2.3 on low.cfg requires 70MB of the VGA's RAM, it won't be possible to run that on a machine with a 64MB graphics adaper? If it's like that, 64MB should be the desireable target...

For myself I haven't checked that some settings might overwrite others, but these settings are enought to run nexuiz even on a 32 Mb GPU like mine ! (this realy tells me almost nobody read http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=1354 this thread... )

Textures will be swapped (into system memory iirc) if the graphic card does not have enough memory so its still playable if the gfx card just has 64mb..I can't tell you how just that will slow down rendering. Maybe its not even noticable much on laptops which often have shared memory.
    I'd rather add a laptop config :)

That's a good idea man, after all there just has to be a config for the weak machines, accessible from the menue. No matter which name you give to that chile :)

But they told me they don't want low.cfg to look like shit. :P

Not sure if it should, however, there is nothing against making a lower.cfg ;)
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
