Three weapons I'd like to change / modify

Developer discussion of experimental fixes, changes, and improvements.

  • #1: The "Laser". The weapon itself is nice. It's the name that makes me grind my teeth. This thing does not in any way resemble a laser. A better name for it would be "momentum gun" or "impulse gun" that fires "impulse bolts". A name like that would not only not be wrong like the current name is, but it would also be descriptive of what it actually does.

#2: The crylink. You guys are already thinking about what to do with it. I've already suggested making the projectiles bouncy and go through what they hit, but I gather that would cause lag. What if you instead let the crylink create a cloud of cold vapour that stays more or less in place for n minutes and cause damage/sec to anybody in it? Or maybe just about any of the other suggestions that have popped up on these forums. I'd rather it was simply removed than left as it is.

#3: Nex. I'd like it to have an indicator that lights up when it's ready to fire. Or if the indicator already is there - a more obvious one.. ;)

Lol i concur w/ #1 :> But I don't really care about the name I never read it anywhere :)

And #3, this should be fairly easy. Since we can choose the color of the crosshair, what about simply adding a second color for it, used when the weapon's not ready?

Some maybe will find it annoying the crosshair changing colors. I don't know about me as I had my crosshair in CS change whenever I clicked the left mouse button (with aliases), but other people.

  • They can still specify 2 equal colors though :)

Better than nothing, I guess, but it seems a little kludgy to me (but then I'm not the guy who will be adding a light to the Nex model). And will it be that noticable?

  • lol I second the rename to impulse gun...

Also I know you guys are already overworked with no pay... but...

the Crylink model doesn't look like a serious weapon... I like the gun itself though. Don't get me wrong, it looks nice... but it looks more like a pistol... not a full sized assult weapon.

  • the idea of a 'laser jump' is just wrong, but i don't think it'll change. Originally the laser was the only weapon the user started with, and was instant hit, but that was really annoying for larger open levels. It slowly got slower, and added push, the name never changed.

  • But still, in one way the laser is still a laser. If you remember the Star Wars movie (and all the other alike), the weapons they have there are laser guns. From them it comes red, green, blue etc. colors. I also know that Mech Commander has weapons named Lasers and it's pretty much the same as the laser gun in Nexuiz, except for the fact that it does more damage and not only pushed someone away. (Unless that's the reason you guys want to rename it :P)

  • Dotn get me started.. besides, thy have blasters, and turbo-lasers, ant turbo-lasers, naturally move very slow XD Also their space ships use recild driven cannons.. do you have any ide what would happen if you fired a cannon in space? (hint: nothing to hold the cannon itself back)

Well, I don't think Star Wars qualifies as a valid reference for physics... ;)

Nah, the reason I want to rename the "Laser" is because no laser would act that way. Really useful weapon (on certain levels), but with a completely misguiding name.

  • Sorry if I bring it somewhat back OT
One thing that's needed imo, is more shotgun pellets. 5 (they are 5, right?) are really too few. I think I read somewhere this was made to save on bandwidth. So how about making the spread non-random (a la CPMA, which is cool but looks ludicrous tbh, and i suspect would cause a revolt), or fake-random: i.e. have the game choose randomly between a number of pre-made spread templates. This way the data sent would be just the same as a single bullet shot plus a number representing the spread shape. I have only the slightest clue about how all of this works behind the curtains bbut i guess this would save bandwidth, right?
The same goes with the crylink, of course, but I'm really with the "crylink -> shaft" party ;)

  • Yes, the pellets was reduced because of bandwidth.
I read that when CSQC works we can save many bytes of bandwidth on weapon projectiles.
I don't know about your fake-random idea.... divvernt should answer this :P
