  • I'm all for a story mode, and to be honest I kinda liked bits and pieces of Flyings Steel's idea. It was very intriguing in the beginning (although Half-Life did pop up in my mind :P) and interesting. However, when they entered the portal and was on the other side, that part didn't much compel to me. It would need a bit different approach I believe, cause as it stands now, that would be deathmatch and other type modes in the campaign (not necessarily but still not appealing to me much :P). I'm not much for different game modes for a campaign, I was thinking of more genuine campaign, like Prey, Half-Life (2) etc. meaning, when you die, you die, you don't respawn.

    @Fisume:
We could still keep the original campaign and you'd never have to play the storyline or even take it into consideration. I think it's fun that it exists for those who want it, but does who do not can choose a different one in their mind or ignore it altogether.

  • It depends if we do follow a UT3 style storymode with just running deathmatches etc.

If we dont then we are going to need enemies that cant pick up... pickups and dont respawn. They will also need no health regen and either much much more health than the player or much much less. General sinegplayery stuff.

Perhaps for part of the finale on Flying Steels idea, on return to earth the team finds that an alien invasion has already begun. Evidently the team is going to hold the only key to defeating them.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

Actually, I never played half life, but I did intend for the plot to not be too far from the well known scifi shooter universes, so that works for me.

What parts did you find interesting, specifically?

What parts about that did not interest you, specifically?

The main issue to overcome with no respawns is how quickly you die in Nexuiz (though the weapons have become gradually less powerful over recent releases).

To keep one life going over a 5 minute or longer level would require a checkpoint system, methinks. My understanding is that would in turn require a robust save system that remembers the game state or what not, instead of the simple counter that ticks up whenever you complete a level, which is all Nexuiz currently has.

Not necessarily, if you apply the Pinata Mutator then enemies can grab pick ups without causing gameplay issues. And you have different character classes (and vehicles) for player, friend and foe to offer variety as far as health and regen stats, as well as a many other characteristics.

You would need to carefully script enemy spawning though.

So to summarize, so far we have a checkpoint save system and spawn scripting as code work requirements for a non-UT3 style campaign.

You guessed it, only I have a little twist I threw in as well. Should I share it here or should we use a more secret system for communicating plot ideas that won't spoil them for the public?

  • I was thinking more for the sake of health/armour pickups than anything else. The pinata mutator is a good idea to get around it though depending on how we want the weapon progression to go.

I'd say keep the storyline under wraps if you have a twist for the moment. We will need to get everyone who is interested together on IRC at somepoint or something.

That's true. Maybe that should be part of the game though- don't let your enemies have access to resources.

Since we're on different timezones, maybe we could shoot drafts to everyone involved over PM.

  • True, perhaps a sign up thread for everyone interested in helping?

  • We could make this the sign-up thread unless you think that wouldn't get enough attention.

  • Well it doesnt seem to be generating a huge response anyway. I've spoken to a few folk that think a story mode would be a good idea but most folk dont have the technical inclination to be able to help with much other than ideas.

I'm going to make a new thread anyway to outline what we need to figure out etc. I'll stick a spoiler warning in it too since it will end up with the plot no doubt.

    Thread be here:
