  • Hitscan shots ARE unlagged by default.. but there was a bug in 2.4.2 which made this feature less usable. In the beta (in the forum) and current code its fixed and works quite well.

What do you mean with player movements? The animations? Well the models are really old but its hard to find really capable modelers willing to the GPL stuff. Besides finally it would also require quite some new code to integrate better model formats. Its planned for AFTER the upcoming release though. At least at some point :)

The default settings are quite demanding but there is a simple way to choose lower defaults in the menu. Hell that sounds like you were quite lazy in testing :P

The menu got improved quite a bit already (i think) feel free to make suggestions or code further improvements.

I'd wait for the upcoming version when hosting a new server.. that should happen rather soon now that the last remaining problems got sorted out.

  • Yes, I haven't tested anything yet. I just took a quick look and figured I'd see if I could help. I'll most likely go a lot more in depth into the code tonight and over the next week, then post suggestions and maybe see if I can send you some code if I find anything I can do quickly.

Thanks for the quick replies. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute. When the new code comes out I'll look into doing the modeling for you. I might be able to fix it up a bit for you. I've done quite a bit of model rendering in the past with Quake.

So I'll post when I have fully learned your project and seen the code and such.

  • I wasn't criticizing. As I said, I've been trying to get the frame rates and such proper. If you guys don't need the help then just say and I'll move on to another project. No worries, no hard feelings... up to you really.

  • Huh? You were criticizing the game within 20 seconds of showing up on my server.

I'm happy for another developer showing interest in contributing to Nexuiz. Nexuiz NEEDS more developers. All I'm suggesting is to spend more than 2 minutes with the game before taking notes and setting goals. Perhaps have a few discussions with the existing developers first (or the primary developer, DivVerent) in IRC. Then you will get a clearer picture of what is really in need of fixing/improvement.

    Is that a bad suggestion?

  • Well, I'm still researching, I was basing my suggestions on your comments about 'some places in this map still have low FPS' comment. It's all gravy.

  • Then you should take a look (play) at sev's and clueless newbie's maps, cause they are the most gpu intensive. You'll be able to easily notice the places where fps goes down a lot.

Some people are suggesting adding a feature where cubemaps could be used for reflective shaders (say for a water one). Also others have said that halflife's (water IIRC) reflections are less-expensive then darkplace's currently (and thus perhaps some optimizations could be had). Please ignore players being... unfriendly: remember they're just players and derive all of their pride from "skillz" and "movement" rather than adding to the game and creating.

  • Is there a list of required stuff / wishlist? Some years ago I wrote a simple opengl thing that generated a maze and allowed you to navigate it in 3D, with collision detection, so I think I might have a chance. Since I play this game quite often, I'd love to help out.

You wrote a 3d maze generator? Cool :D Randomly Autogenerated maps would be cool in nexuiz. Especially if one could set (brush/bsp) 'tiles' to be used as walls, floors, other pieces etc, how many floors it should be (x, y, z tiles). :D. Maybe even randomly autogenerated cities (I've seen sshots of such things in other places) for nex, with parameters?

As the new release is just out, the devs are concentrating on bug fixing. See http://nexuiz.com/bugs for a list.. there is also a feature tracker but the best place to start would be on irc.. #alientrap on irc.anynet.org and talk to the devs :)

  • Welcome Natrob87.

Saw you in #alientrap already, just at a slightly bad time i guess. Most of the people there adhere to european sleeping times :-). I think a formal request is not needed, just hang around, try to get into the stuff, ask some questions.. contributions will happily accepted.
The best way should be to simply get a development checkout (descripted in Nexuiz/Docs/FAQ.html) and getting to know the project. Maybe checking some of the past changes, either via svn or websvn access. Even simply testing can help. There have been some slight oversights on the latest release (like some docs still mention version 2.4 :P) and more testing can always help with that..
Then there is also the bugs and feature tracker (http://nexuiz.com/bugs). I guess QuakeC is still new to you but its very similar to plain C and should be easy to understand. I think nothing beats a good chat at a better time :) Just feel welcome and lets see how you can fit in?

Actually i think that goes to everyone.. Its much better to just plundge into the talks and action then just drop off a mail address.. (small hint at snizzo)

  • My post just before yours is less then a day old.. so yeah this IS still current!

I'd say please read my post and act accordingly. Thats way better then waiting for someone to act. Most people are actually busy with stuff and just trying to be pro-active would be really helpful! Also you did not even say what you think you are good at. How can you expect a PM to that? Don't get me wrong, help is appreciated and needed but we need to know at least with what you might help :-)

  • Hi guys,

I want to help out developing Nexuiz. I really like the concept. I'm a modeller and have done also some animations. I'm using Blender. So if you still need devs in that category please contact me via E-Mail.

  • Hey, still looking for developers? I am a new computer engineering grad and I am looking for a project to work on in my spare time. Me and my friend came across this game last night and I would like to offer my services :)

The areas I would like to be involved in are:
    - the game engine
    - graphics
    - effects (preferably with vertex/geometry/fragment shaders)

I have a lot of experience with C/C++, OpenGL and nVidia Cg (could easily learn glsl if it is prefered).

My most recent project (my final project for comp engr) was a GPU-based real-time fluid simulator. Definitely not something you would put in a game but it was still pretty cool. I can send you some pictures, or a video of it if you like. Basically it was a full 3D volume that performed navier-stokes fluid equations completely on the GPU using floating-point numbers to create an animation. (a lot of framebuffer object experience from this)

I also worked on some vertex shaders and fragment shaders at a previous job where I made a wave model for a training simulator. Much simpler than the fluid sim, it was just a 2D mesh that moved based on an f(t) in the vertex shader. The lighting was done in the fragment shader, along with refraction and reflection of the cube map and other objects. It also had to be able to give the normal vector anywhere along the wave (so other objects could interact with it too).

As for the game engine I do not have a lot of experience with that, but I am pretty good with data structures and design patterns so I could definitely help out.

Also, in terms of graphics, i mean more of geometry for levels, texture mapping, trying to improve efficiency of current techniques etc. Im not someone to be drawing up textures or trying to make 3D models - I lack the artistic touch lol.

Well, let me know if you are interested in the help. It will probably be quicker to reach me at kennysmith1[at]gmail[dot]com since I dont know how often I will remember to check this board at first.

  • Hi

I'm new to the forum and I'm a software engineer but my background is in embedded software with some application development. I program in C and C++ and am interested in learning games programming. I'm interested in helping out if you think you can use me but I'm not sure how I'd fit in.

If you think I would be of use and can advice where and how, I'd be interest to hear your suggestion. My thought was any lower level code as that would be nearer the sort of design and coding I'm used to working with

  • hey guys

if someone could make me some concept art of a character (preferably front view) i would indeed model a player model, animate it, and possibly skin it. I am able to model almost anything i want, in 3ds max. I need to read up on animation though :O
can someone also point me to some existing concept art / artists?

edit: heh, seems lots of people want to make players. anyway, i'm also a dev for quake2world ( http://quake2world.net ) for texture work and mapping. I kinda quit mapping, but that's irrelevant to what i am offering. Needless to say i do indeed have experience.
