List of ideas for future CSQC driven HUDs

Developer discussion of experimental fixes, changes, and improvements.

Moderators: Nexuiz Moderators, Moderators

  • I've had some sparetime and created this article in the OUNS wiki (I hope the location is alright).

It contains a lot of thoughts and ideas I had about possible future implementations of the HUD, which is already ported to CSQC, which allows the developers to do a whole lot of stuff with it :)

Feel free to comment here, or there in the wiki.

  • I think enough time has gone by that I can release the PSD for my hud mockup if anyone wants a starting point to work off some of the ideas on OUNS.

The PSD is released under the GPL.

Victim has coded up some of it... I'm not sure what point he's currently at but maybe he'll feel comfortable enough to release it soon.

  • z, could you explain what different colours for weapons mean? I thought that weapons using same ammo, should have same colour, but this is not the case.

No weapon: weapon picture in the slot is grayed out
Weapon with no ammo: grey picture without colour
Weapon has ammo: weapon with colour
Weapon is reloading: weapon slot is filling up showing the progress

  • on weapons:

Colors were designed to be similar to quake weapons, sort of a legacy tribute thing... I matched the weapons as best I could but created new colors if they didn't match a weapon or where hard to differentiate.

    Image

Weapon icons are faded when you don't have them in your inventory.

You bring up an interesting topic about the ammo. It would be nice if perhaps they light up with color when you had the weapon but go gray when you run out of ammo.

    lol reload progress?

If weapons are going to begin reloading, we should consider overheating indication as well say shotgun jamming.

I think the idea of a this "theming engine" is great.

  • I mean if we have sniping rifle which takes 3 secs to reload (weapons are recharging/reloading/whatever you call it even now except showing a progress with most of them does not make sense), it would be nice to have an indicator when you can switch back. As well, there is no sense in showing weapon if you have no ammo for it (e.g. hl does not show the weapon without ammo).

  • THIS HUD LOOKS TOTALLY AWFUL.

    GET RID OF COURIER.

Seriously, even Comic Sans looks better. This HUD does contain some great ideas, but the use of Courier makes it look totally out of place. Why, out of all millions of fonts, did you have to take this eyesore of a font?
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

The rifle does not reload in 3 seconds, but in 1.2.

Also, it stops reloading, and starts over, if you switch away while it is reloading. This is to intentionally make the rifle unsuitable for weapon combos, as it'd otherwise be much too strong.

Why not increase to 3 secs or smth and make it comboable?

I just provided a good 20+ hours worth of work on a PSD under the GPL and you complain about the font. Do whatever you want to it. Like a font change is hard?

The font wasn't the focus on this skin, the skin is not completed. I don't have time to continue work on it right now.

Maybe you can come off as less of an asshole in the future.

    Thanks.

By the way... this PSD requires photoshop for the blending options and it's nice to have the folder sorting for layers.

  • Thanks for the PSD, -z-

And from the screenshots victim showed me, he has gotten large parts of the CSQC hud working (with your graphics) already.

Indeed is, given that you made the impression that you wanted this ugly font in Nexuiz. I absolutely hate Courier.

As I said. The other stuff sure is nice, but this font really tears it down.

Oh, and I can put your argument the other way round. You worked 20 hours on this, and didn't even notice this awful font.

  • It's not that I "didn't notice" it's a fixed-width font AS YOU REQUESTED. Because you didn't want to RECODE THE CURRENT FONT PARSER. So it's a PLACE HOLDER.

Think you can address me without attacking me or my work? You're unhappy when I theorize because it makes you feel like I'm forcing you to do more work but you're still unhappy when I submit something of substance.

I'm trying to work with you but no matter what I do you try and find a way to tell me I'm not good enough. As a developer (one who's just gone through hell and back) I'd imagine you'd be more empathetic but rather you try and knock me down when I'm trying to help the game in areas I can.

    I don't find that motivating.

  • Ffs, what the hell is going on? Such a harsh discussion about a font. It's not the font issue, but the main layout thing. Fonts could be made to change at user preference (so there won't be I like that and I like that and ... ). The question is whether people like such layout or not (until it could be arranged according to user preference as well).

BTW, talking about fonts I have a large monospaced fonts collection. If somebody is interested, I could post a zip here (not all a GPL'ed or free). The best one for me is Terminus (this is GPL'ed). It's really great font. Using it in all text editors, IDE''s where I program. Artwiz smoothansi font would look nice in Nexuiz too.

Personally, I'm more concerned about usability of a HUD more than aesthetical pleasure. Having HUD providing essential information, imo, is more important for most of the players.

First of all, Courier isn't the only fixed width font out there. It actually is the worst fixed width font ever. There's also Bitstream Vera Sans Mono, Terminus, and about a million other fixed width fonts. They don't all look like a freaking typewriter.

    But...

    WTF?

    Now you're telling lies.

For how long does Nexuiz now ALREADY use a variable width font in the
scoreboard[1]? Have you been asleep[2] all the time?

Either that, or must be a total retard.

You forgot to mention that it was YOU who put me through hell.

And I do not forget that you did SOMETHING for Nexuiz. If you hadn't made the website, you'd have a permanent ban from the forums since quite some months now. Only the fact that you did make it did make me NOT ban you in the CTF thread.

  • I do recommend trying to not get mad at each other. It's a mockup, it for sure has some valuable input for discussion to offer, so let's all be calm and discuss what's good and what's not. There's no need or purpose for yelling.

The font (which can/will be swapped anyway) apparently isn't everybody's darling, so what about the layout?

  • I haven't touched that god damn PSD since the inception of the CSQC scoreboard... which I worked closely with blub to describe ideas that the CURRENT SCOREBOARD USES. divVerent can't seem to remember this but I'm sure blub is willing to back me up on this communication of ideas.

I try to do a nice thing to give someone else a head start on a HUD mockup but divVerent can't pass up any chance he has to attack me.

divVerent, you put this pressure on yourself. I was merely theorizing and defending my concepts against other members who weren't taking the time to read my posts or theory behind the scoring system. WHICH YOU'VE BASED THE SVN SCORING SYSTEM ON.

So as much as you like to publicly hate on me and the ninjaz, I (and we) have contributed much more than just a website. I'd love to help more in areas that affect YOU and make YOU happy because I know there a few things that frustrate you... but you have NO RESPECT for my learning curve / priorities. Instead of asking me and trying to understand the projects I'm working on you tell me I'm not good enough and my priorities are wrong. This is very frustrating and I must seek inspiration elsewhere. You're pushing me away from this community and claiming I'm causing the separation.

If you weren't so busy telling me how to live my life and act in these forums maybe you could see what you're doing and how you're acting and realize what a hypocrite you're really being.

  • Could I recommend that you two exchange telephone numbers and sort that out just in between you? In case you'd rather not disclose personal information to each other, you even could both register at some free sip service just for this and agree about a time for a telephone discussion via the pm function of this board.

Personally, I don't think a forum is the right place to sort out personal differences as it allows only written communication - which always is kind of impersonal and encourages escalation rather than actually settling any conflict. Plus, I don't see how anyone, including you two, could possibly benefit from publicly arguing like this.

    +1 for SavageX and C.Brutail
