Some thoughts I had about sound.

  • Everytime a new Nex is released, more and more of my problems with the game are eliminated, so I thought, why not suggest some things and see if they're implimented? :)

Today, while I played Nex, I was thinking two things regarding the sound in the game. First, some of the weapon sound effects are kind of dull and don't really give a kind of kick that you experience in other games. The shotgun, mortar, hagar, and, especially, the uzi seem to suffer from this - they just don't have a sharp sound like you'd expect them to. I know there's been a lot of debate over the mortar sound, but I think all of them could be improved upon somehow.

Another though was regarding the music. The music is very good, of course, and I like to listen to it even outside of the game. However, for one thing, it's a little limited in the styles used, in that it's pretty much all synth techno, where, in many other games, there is a variety of orchestral, rock, techno, and sometimes blends of all of these. Orchestral might be pushing it a bit for a free game, but some rock or techno-rock tunes would be nice - this brings me to my next point that the music doesn't really motivate you in the game. In some games, when you hear a map's song start to play, it gets you real pumped up due to its high speed and energy, but Nex's doesn't really do that effect. It's enjoyable, of course, as I've said, but the particular tracks used seem to be lacking in energy.

I don't know how much can be done about these by the team, but they're just some suggestions.

As far as i know the sdl variant can do it an all systems.. the linux native variant (glx) too. Not sure about the mac. The windows native variant (nexuiz.exe) can't do it, only stereo. That should change with the next patch :). But there is a bug in the change holding off the patch..
Oh and nexuiz can use up to 7.1 = 8 channels..

  • I was a fan of the older mortar sounds.

I was thinking about downloading some music software to play with, but I never got around to it.

  • I have to agree that the different kinds of music aren't that broad and could be broadened (especially some rock/metal :D).

But I really don't think that the current tracks don't motivate for playing - for me, those tracks TOTALLY do that. With most of the songs, my adrenaline goes up in the beginning and I am very motivated by them :)

  • Most games have a certain style of music and do not mix it. Granted most shooters have rock music, Nexuiz not. I prefer no music while playing so i can hardly comment on the music :) but the problem is indeed licensing the music. Nexuiz is completly free (gpl) including the content. Guess it was hard to find some matching songs that were allowed to become gpl. I know nowadays there is lots of CC music but is there anyone that wants to license a whole bunch of songs under gpl to be included in Nexuiz?

  • Does nex have the capability to have user defined playlist from around the harddrive, not from within the nex data folder? kind of the way that ut2k4 had the mp3 player built into it.

  • No it does not have such a thing currently and because of the way quake-engines interact with the filesystem its not (that easily??) possible to access a file Outside the main directory.. But on the other hand this is also a security plus :)

  • It would be kind of cool, though, to be able to put symlinks/shortcuts to audio folders and have the game randomly play them back, if the user enables it in the options or something to override the game's soundtrack.

  • Mostly OGG, some wav. It depends how you look at it. Not that much power is needed to decode a few seconds of OGG.

  • Afaik fuhQuake can remote control winamp or xmms, so it might be an option to play music outside nexuiz.

That's probably not such a good idea to depend upon. Not every platform will allow programs to share the sound system. You would also need to support an awful lot of music players to cope with everyones preferences, I for one don't like either Winamp or XMMS.
