Changing the 2on2 ladder mappool after Nexuiz v2.3 release

  • This is the current mappool:
    • Aneurysm
    • Bleach
    • Bloodprison
    • Darkzone
    • Runningman
    • Runningman_1on1remix
    • Soylent
    • Stormkeep
    • Toxic
    • Warfare

    I think that quite some maps don't deserve to be there because they are too small:
    Bloodprison, Warfare and Soylent are maps that are definetely too small for 2on2, it is a non-stop action with shotgun only and it is just non-sense.
    Beside this I also think that the following maps are also too small, but we will need some 2on2 test matches to verify that: Darkzone, Runningman, Runningman_1on1remix.

    Beside this there are new map/mapconfigs since v2.3 that deserve to be added.
    First of all the good old map Dieselpower came back. I think it has a very good size for 2on2 and will definetely be added!
    Beside this I would consider these two maps to be tested for suitability: The new Final Rage which dimensions look good for 2on2, and also RunningmanCTF which got a TDM mapconfig, which means that it could be played 2vs2. I am just not sure if it is probably a bit too big, that needs to be tested.

    To get things going I just want you guys to test the maps Final Rage and RunningmanCTF for suitability, and also test the maps Darkzone and the Runningman(+1on1remix) maps, whether they are suitable or not. If I am not part of the 2on2's I'd like someone of the participants to upload the demos. For me the most interesting fact is that the maps may not be too crowded - and on the other hand the players may not be too lost in the map.

  • I agree on about pretty much everything just about with what green said regarding maps.


    but darkzone..isn't that great.

    Final_Rage...we just played some, me green, sxt and dave...and it is such a nice good map to play...the ceilings in the corridors could do with being bigger, but otherwise the map is amazing to play.

    Diesalpower...wonderful idea! Surely a map for 2on2 play!!!!

    Soylent...yea too small.

    Runningmanctf...it could work actually, even though im not too keen on the two bases idea for tdm...but it certainly gives the space, and is worth testing!


    With finally some roomy 2on2 maps...i think TDM really will get a lot better...rather then just the shotgun for half of the game, i can't wait.

  • Here's my demo from Final_Rage.

    Bear in mind this is the first time i have played this map, we played for fun with no comms or tactics really but i hope it shows people how good TDM can be, and the map in play.

  • I had another 2on2 together with dim vs Prayer and Dave. We played tdm-runningmanctf, final rage and dieselpower.

    I think that all these three maps are suitable for 2on2 playing and I don't think further discussion on these is needed.

    The next step would be to test the runningman-maps and Darkzone for playability, so that I know which of these maps should be ruled out in future, and that I can finally update the mappool in one single step.

  • I agree with kojn, Final Rage is an amazing map and deserves to be included in the mappool :D

    Yeah, I'm the one who got crushed in that test match xD
    But I still had a lot of fun :mrgreen:

  • I think you only need one runningman map...as in, runningmanctf map or just one of the other runningman maps, rather then 2 or more.

  • agreed (re: bloodprison). It has an interesting design that I think makes it pretty unique, but it could be expanded a little bit. When playing CTF, it gets a little cramped and it is difficult to find weapons/ammo on a full server.

  • Maps like Diesalpower, and final_rage give a lot of space for play, as well as time to build up for taking on positions e.g quad e.t.c (more powerups on TDM maps would be nice at times, when needed)

    like green said too many of the current maps suffer from not being able to do this, and wading into battle with a shogun for half of the match.

  • Procyon2 is preddy spacey ;P seriosly unless greens evil ati refuses to do its job and thus convincing him its a crap map i think it could be a interesting tdm map. sure its a bit open, but thers alot of room to move abt.

  • runningman bloodprison and soylent sucks as 2on2 maps but darkzone is good as a 2on2 map

  • To be honest i think darkzone seems to small for a 2on2 map..But hey, we can take a look into the q3 mappack for 2on2 maps.. many of them should be big enough.
    Other then that i agree with Green and Kojn.. the three maps Green mentioned ARE too small, the new suggestions are ok, but three runningmans would be too much.. at most _1on1remix and ctf variant

  • Since I am lazy this is a good time to simply re-post the maps of the q3 mappack that are suitable (and take the new fixed mappack pls from http://downloads.sourceforge.net/nexuiz ... ack_r2.zip) here :)

    And since I agree with you that 3 Runningmans are too many, I would already rule out the normal "Runningman" out, but still like you to test "Runningman_1on1remix".

  • esteel, dim, sym and me had another test session. This time we were testing 4 maps of the Q3 Mappack for Nexuiz (from the official Nexuiz Download page).

    Choosing these four maps was done by me: I was simply taking:
    - the ones that were performing with good FPS in ALL situations
    - the ones that were big enough for 2on2
    - the ones that were also "wide", which means that they weren't having tiny hallways etc.

    The result were these four maps:


    Except for storm3dm3, which has abusable mapbugs, all other 3 maps were playable and offered a very interesting gameplay. One or more maps might require a minor change in item placement, but nevertheless, they are all great.

    I'd like to hear more opinions about these maps, or other maps. But keep in mind that only maps that really perform somehow OK, are big (but not too big) and have wide hallways should be considered.

    I had some of these maps there previously and when unzip asked me about overwriting I chose no apparently. The server runs the new versions now.

  • It seems as if the community is falling asleep again, and we still need a decision about this topic.

    I'd like you to test the four Q3 maps mentioned above a bit further (the pn.de server runs the newer versions now, although it's still very likely that storm3dm3 still has the abusable bugs, but the item placements should be correct now). Beside this you also need to test the maps Darkzone, Runningman_1on1remix and RunningmanCTF. Be aware that I will soon start a poll where you decide to either take Runningman_1on1remix OR RunningmanCTF, since it is indeed the best way to chose only one map out of that map family.

    By this post the decision about the other maps is already made:
    - Final Rage and Diesel Power will be added to the mappool
    - Bloodprison, Warfare, Runningman and Soylent will be removed

    So the only things that are left is to test the q3 maps and Darkzone, and to decide about whether Runningman_remix or RunningmanCTF should be preffered.

  • Since there wasn't much interest in this issue anymore, here are the results I came up with:

    - Final Rage and Diesel Power will be added to the mappool
    - Bloodprison, Warfare, Runningman, Runningman_1on1remix, Soylent and Darkzone will be removed
    - RunningmanCTF has indeed too many items (armor/health) and won't be added to the pool
    - 79drdm5_beta2 will be added to the pool

    I am not sure about the other three Q3 maps, they lack testing/opinions, and noone wants to test them. Not my problem.

    I'll create the news on the ladder page, change the pool and also reflect the changes on the rules pages of the 2on2 ladder. All serveradmins have to make sure that they provide a map download for the Q3 custom map.
