[MAP x2] Hook Race + Eyecancer - Cured!

This is probably one of those love / hate maps. The hook is necessary, so I put the line "settemp_for_type ctf g_grappling_hook 1" in the .mapinfo. Hopefully, this will turn the hook on for this map but not for the next map on the server. Download the map here:

    http://folk.uio.no/clund/nexuiz/HookRace_v1r1.pk3

    [Eyecancer_Cured]

Cortez was not at all happy with what I did with his map, so I've removed the link. I'll remove the mod from my website when I get around to doing so.

  • I only played Hook Race- I wouldn't want to subject myself even to a "cured" cancer.

The idea for hook race is cool- very similar to Nexrun, just without the mod code. Maybe you could get in touch with Rev to make it a Nexrun map.

I love your new "Clueless Newbie" style- the weird sterile architecture is instantly recognizable.

3 suggestions for gameplay- The start and go places are sort of counter-intuitive- it's odd that you start somewhere you don't readily see. You should probably make bounce pads to the start area, as well as a large indicator telling you where to go. Also, block off the exit (the end of the race) so that people can't interfere (make a 1 way bounce field, for instance) with the race.

Second, I think it would be awesome if you had a "starting gate" type thing. Each player would go into a slot, like a horse race, then a person somewhere else would have a button which would lower the gate (or something).

Finally, I love your use of patches architecturally, but they cause some serious problems. In many places, the joints between patches will stop a player dead in their tracks- just run along the edge of the track and you will see. You can probably fix this by manually applying clip that smoothes those joints over.

Overall, it needs a bit of work, but its really cool overall!

  • I hope you didn't use that LOGO image for the levelshot
and I hope you did take the levelshot with default brightness
    and with default fov
    etc....

    EDIT:
Okay, you DID use the LOGO image as level shot

    FIX IT!

In the mapvote screen, people are supposed to see the MAPS in the screenshots, to be able to recognize them, not some logo

And remove the text from the eyecancer levelshot
The map name is already displayed in the voting screen, and in the menu where you choose the map, and the images aren't big enough, so what's the point in having text there?
    FIX IT!

    Apart from that:
I like what you made of eyecancer :)
    Nice texturing

  • I agree with everything that torus has said. Your style is getting better and better and you continuously think ~outside the box~. I love the twist. Definitely get in touch with Revenant.

Do you plan on making more like this?

Never played Nexrun. Where can I download it?

3 suggestions for gameplay- The start and go places are sort of counter-intuitive- it's odd that you start somewhere you don't readily see.

You mean tucked behind a curve like that? It prevents long-range nex camping at the finishing line. (not that there aren't other places that invite nex-camping)
You should probably make bounce pads to the start area, as well as a large indicator telling you where to go.

That's why some of the wall textures have those big red arrows.. ;) I did consider putting some signs in the big room with the tube though — I can see some players having trouble there.
Also, block off the exit (the end of the race) so that people can't interfere (make a 1 way bounce field, for instance) with the race.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. There is a one-way bounce-field at the bases.
Second, I think it would be awesome if you had a "starting gate" type thing. Each player would go into a slot, like a horse race, then a person somewhere else would have a button which would lower the gate (or something).

Cool idea, but you'd often end up with half the team stuck behind the starting gates, cursing the teammates who won't let them out and the mapmaker who made the gates to begin with.. ;/
Finally, I love your use of patches architecturally, but they cause some serious problems. In many places, the joints between patches will stop a player dead in their tracks- just run along the edge of the track and you will see. You can probably fix this by manually applying clip that smoothes those joints over.

Yeah, those mesh edges can be a pain — and it's not just the edges either. I didn't notice any serious problem areas while I tested the map*, so I didn't use any clips. I guess there'll be an updated version once I've had the chance to play it and see for myself where the players get stuck. Assuming this turns out to be a problem.
Overall, it needs a bit of work, but its really cool overall!

    Thanks, again. 8)

    * I used the hook when I tested the map — which meant I hardly ever got near the floor. Which is probably why I didn't run into any sticky mesh edges.

    FIX IT!

The point of the preview images is (or should be) to let the players have an image that can be used to know what map they're voting for — not so they can view and learn the map before voting for it. It doesn't matter what that image is — a screenshot, an overview of the map, or a child's drawing — as long as it's fairly unique and easily recognizable. And a logo-like image is often easier to recognize than a random screenie. IMHO, of course.

Didn't do anything with the teleporters. That's just how they turned out when I compiled the map. Weird things sometimes happen when I mod maps. In vitamea, for instance, all the scenery objects just vanished. No idea why.

I currently have five maps lined up (plus mods). One of them will definitely have a visual style similar to Hook Race. But my next map will be a return to the RustVents style — but it'll be a smaller map, more suited for the number of players commonly on the nex servers.

    Umm... I'd still prefer screenshots.
    Still, keep in mind that
    a) the name is usually displayed seperately anyway
    b) if you make screenshots, use default brightness and fov settings

Actually, I NEVER played that map except once. Each time it got voted and I was playing, I just took that match off as a spectator and went and did other things, like eating. I have my music always either turned off or set incredibly low so that I barely hear that. But I hear this map had some weird "music" in it.

Now perhaps, I will play this map.

PS. I like to have my eyes and ears kept intact.

I generally left the server altogether. Eyecancer was totally unplayable for me. I could see anything and the "music" was unbelievably annoying. Too bad. I think it could have been a fun map if it hadn't been for the way it looked and sounded.

Afraid not. Despite how I feel about the original version, I've decided to remove the map out of respect for Cortez. (see the edited version of my OP)

No, of course not. But the players need to be able to see what they're doing. And it's hard to play with your fingers jammed in your ears.. ;)

Nothing wrong with the occasional joke level (eyeccancer, suicide booth, augenkreibe), but notice how very rarely they get played once the joke gets old?

Yes, we do need unusual maps!

Why does everyone hate eyecancer, ito, spacehampster...

    ito,

I rather like Ito, actually. Not my favorite map, but I don't mind playing it now and then.
    spacehampster...

'cuz it's impossible to get anywhere.. ;)

Different, offbeat, strange maps are a good thing imo. But they have to be playable — and "playable" means being able to actually play. Spacehampster and Eyecancer are both unplayable, but for different reasons. Ito, otoh, is perfectly playable (I can see where I'm going and both flags are reachable). Augenkriebe is also playable, even though it gives me migraines.. ;)

  • I think I _will_ make a mod to eyecancer... and I don't care of cortez disapproves.

But all I'll do is adding cel shading (like blueamuse81_wsw) and possibly changing the skybox.

Hm... and maybe non-free-izing the map by replacing the song by developers-developers-developers-developers... but no, then I need to turn it into an anti-map somehow... perhaps by making the map show as sky, and the sky be one-colored red/blue... not sure yet
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • I really can't believe that there's any objection to a mod of eyecancer. I remember when cortez was making the map and he showed me a preview... I jokingly said that he should make it augenkreb2 (eye cancer 2) so he removed the textures and did. I always though it was meant mostly as a joke, especially with the music.

Cortez, I think you should really reconsider your objections, if you are actually being serious. Variation is not destruction, it is evolution and leads to diversity.
