[CTF Map] Ancient

  • Well I was going to add support for DOM and ONS but I couldn't be arsed. I also considered just not releasing this but I'm going to anyway otherwise it renders the entire excercise pointless.

Fairly simple open ctf maps people seem to like a lot. So I made one that ruins line of sight with trees so its much harder to see across. Take that, campers!

Used a multitude of textures. Some from opengameart.org, all gpl or public. Made the bumpmaps for the stone textures myself (poorly).

Enjoy. Please inform me asap if there are missing textures/models/gophers.

  • I should, but caulking doesn't seem to make a great deal of difference. Its supposed to reduce compile time as far as I am aware, but I just let my machine crunch through it. Normally I do caulk everything but I felt lazy today :)

As to hinting its not something I'm confident to be able to do well.

  • Hinting probably won't have too much of an effect, since the map is quite open.

What I would suggest is to improve the lights. Especially from the skyshader, since the map does not at all reflect the fact that there is an unobscured sun (for example no real shadows from the trees), and at some places it's completely wrong:

  • I never noticed. For some reason that seems to be one of the few skyboxes that is lit at all. Normally I used ones from the archive but they never seem to work quite right.

  • Wow it looks beautiful. Downloading now.

    EDIT

Minor complaint: Bloom and HDR wash the textures out on this map. It looks beautiful when bloom and HDR are disabled though and more importantly it plays well.

    Cheers.

Yeah I'd expect the ground texture to look washed out its very light. Once the map gets more testing I'll maybe darken and replace it or something. Its not up on any servers yet that I am aware of :(

Is it possible to just set the map info to keep bloom/hdr from being enabled? If you can do that it seems like that would be an easy way to fix the only flaw I found.

  • It looks great from the screens. I also like how you inhibited camping instead of removing the nex all together. Could someone else possibly be arsed to make this in other gamemodes? It's a shame ctf and (t)dm get all the love.

  • I plan to do more gamemodes in the next version as well as some optimisations. I just wanted to see how the map went down with people first :)

  • you should make lightmaps for the map as well, especially the trees. it would make it look 1000x better. :D
Why has a developer ever needed any reason other than "it looks bloody awesome?"

  • sorry, I mean so that the trees cast shadows based on the world lighting. (I don't map, so i don't know what it would be called, XD sorry.)

  • n1ce work dude :D

hmm for Die Tunichtguten server it would be cool if the map border walls would be a little bit higher, because of our gravity settings^^ :>

Maybe something like a fence would be cool, that the skybox dont lost the signification because of the mapangle from the player to the skybox :p

    or or or

you only make higher walls at the sides where the flags are, because only there the walls are too small :/ i think

  • NEW VERSION 1r1

    Changes:
-Increased the wall height a little for you minsta fellas
-Attempted to increase framerates (I say attempted remember)
-Trees should now be hookable/lit properly
    -Added support for onslaught
-Altered the torches in the nex room so they bounce you up to the jet pack, which can then be used to get the quad. At least, for those of you who suck at laser jumping :)
-Decreased the pk3 size just a tad.

  • this is a map which plays quite nice.

for example the trees prevent easy rocketjumping from one side to another, you most likely end up stuck within the tree tops ^^
also, there is good traversal and lateral action.. the sides are stacked with sniper rifle, the bases have good grenade and launchers and such.

i noticed that the megahealth get ignored by quite a lot of people btw.. ^^

this is a good map, for sure. (maybe enforce the trees)

  • I'll need to get round to making a new version of this some time for both Nexuiz and Xonotic. Evidently I'll need to modify the big nexuiz N at each base for one game hehe.
