  • People mention Blender as a multi-platform program for creating 3D models for maps. I was wondering if anyone used Wings3D for models in Nexuiz? How does it stack up?

  • Really, I haven't had a good experience at all trying to get stuff into Nexuiz. The formats are simply unsupported unless you go for 3D max et al. You will have to go through milkshape or some other converter to get it into a format to convert it into a Nexuiz model.

If someone could do some documentation on the converters...

  • Wings3d is horribly limited and it's usually good for doing quick mesh drafts. Blender is more specialized for exporting especially to game engines since it has full animation tools, uv tools, and whatnot.

  • Well... I've heard that wings is the better modeler, and Wings3D and blender export to each other really easy.

  • I've tried the lot of opensource 3d apps including Wings3D, Blender, Aztec3D and Anim8or.
Of all, Wings is probably the most limited IMHO.
Blender has the steepest learning curve but is definitely the most mature.
With that said, most 3D artists use a range of tools instead of just one.
Get them all and find a workflow which works for you. After all, the're free. :)
Also try SharpConstruct. I never got it to work myself but I'm still very excited about this one.

I think that this has been the bottleneck in the development cycle from day 1.
I have spoken face-to-face with a couple 3D artists and the reactions were the same:
    1. Work for free? Why?
    2. ZYM? WTF!

    It's SDK time IMHO.

    P.S.
There is a PERFECTLY WORKING MD3 import/export for Blender which I found poking around the xreal site http://xreal.sourceforge.net. It's the one I used to import the MD3 weapons to the native Blender format. Can't find the link right now but I can always host it somewhere. I guess it's GPL. They don't specify.
These XreaL guys seem real serious about making a next-gen game out of Quake 3. I honestly think they are Nex's only real competition.

  • dont scare ppl with zym :) better say half-life2 smd
its natural that no1 know zym, its used only in nexuiz

why work for free ? to get paid job you need to show your work, and your models in working, finished game is best example what can you do.

  • Yeah, but zym is obscure for opensource standards. There are no known completely opensource methods to create zym files

  • You miss my point Morphed. Zmodel is command line and requires config files to be hand edited I think. I say "I think" because I never got it to work! It's not that it can't be done it's just that the development tool simply isn't mature enough for anybody else but the programmers to use.
We have the community contributing lots of maps because the tools (GTKRadiant + Nex config) is documented and mature.
We have a few updated skins, which means people are interested, but no community models. The export process is just too flakey.
Anyway, it is definitely possible to use only opensource to create for Nexuiz maybe it's about time someone (like me?) started a thread on how to model for Nexuiz.

  • Wings3D is limited by design and extremly advanced for modeling organic subD models, nothing more and but also nothing less.
