  • I just had a look at the Crysis website. They have some brilliant looking work to show off their new engine:
    Image

I think that Nexuiz could match this. :D
So here's the challenge: Of all photographs posted in this thread one will be chosen and mapped, as accurately as possible. It would be cool if you post multiple shots of the same place.

I would prefer indoor photos of factories and other industrial stuff.

  • Well it really looks good but it also looks very unreal.. I read that pictures only look good if they are 'real' or 'far enough from being real'. I think this one falls into the category between which makes the picture look worse then it is but might just be me.

Oh and sure can Nex render shots like this one.. The question is just how fast and is anyone willing to put enough energy into it :)

I want proof it can, besides, once someone does everybody else can cut and paste.

That would be a lot harder in Nexuiz and games in general. Industrial buildings are a lot easier.

It would be much more difficult to do outdoor but post the photo anyway. If it is very good I don't see why we shouldn't try it.

  • Do we post any photo that we find, like on flickr?
Or would we need to post ones that we know have an open license?

At the bottom left of this directory is a list of royalty-free photo repositories

If you do a search for factory, warehouse or building, you may find some gems.

Any photo from anywhere is fine. All I want is a pretty environment you would like to see rendered in Nexuiz. I don't want to copy the Crysis map.

  • wow...this one is quite interesting

Too bad there aren't more pictures. I'd like to see more of that area.

I'll bet the photographer has 5-6 versions of that area, but he picked only this one for Flickr :-)

The grass would be the real challenge in this one :)

Multiple images of the same place...

A dirty warehouse with interesting wooden rafters with sprinkled graffiti in a few places.

This looks feasible but kinda boring. It's just that the warehouse doesn't seem to have anything in it.

Here's a post from a completely unrelated post:

It looks like good CG to me but I like it.

Anybody has an interesting apartment they can post pictures of?

  • My exams finished a couple hours ago so it is time for this to get started. :D
I think it's kinda boring myself but i'll probably go with the studio, mainly because there are multiple clear photos.
I'm really tempted by the bioreactors because i'd just love to frag there though. It depends on how i feel tomorrow.

  • To make a real-world type level actually work in DP it might be best to take some pointers from F.E.A.R.'s style of level design. That game is very realistic but stays away from a great amount of small detail. It focuses on industrial and indoor office areas and puts lots of effort into the textures themselves instead of making a ton of models to add to detail. This technique both saves time for designers and saves system requirements.

  • If that saves system requirements, then I'd hate to see FEAR's system requirements without it!

  • I guess I should post an update on this so here goes:
I've found that you really need lots of pictures of the area for this kind of work and you have to custom make almost all of your textures if you want a good replica.
I'm gonna need to do some real-life spot I can walk around in and photograph if i'm going to get anything like a perfect match.
As a more fun alternative I began experimenting with building areas from my DVD's. I had a good look at Alien 1 and 2 which is certainly where lots of FPS get inspiration. I'll see how it goes.

  • I have a bit of time on my hands these days so I was able to do custom textures, bumps and glosses. I made a box to test them out in:

    Anyways here's a screenshot.
