  • I am using the new model since this thread was created. And i like it as is. It doesn´t "hide" so much of the screen.

So in my opinion it could be set as standard. :)

  • Yep. The only reason I dont like the old rl is that teh back end of it is oddly bulbous- and takes up too much of the screen imo. This one looks alot more modern. :)

  • Design looks nice to me. I'd model those bulges (or how they are called) out a bit. Just very lowpoly, maybe with a bit round edges and use the normalmap for smoothing/detailing.

  • well it looks good, but i have a problem with it...
it DEFINETLY looks better, but the rocket needs a colour change
the rocket still looks like it's for the other launcher, it needs a new look
... and maybe a size change somewhere.
a smaller rocket or a larger launcher, as the rocket looks wider than the launcher
the rocket needs a makeover too lol
    if you ignore the text...
    Image
a rocket like this, except a lil more smoothed, and i think we got a suitable rocket

I'm using the model actually. I've been using it ever since it got released. But I think I'm pretty much the only one. I too want to have it included as standard RL.
And as for the rockets itself, I agree with Pure Insanity that it should be remade. It's looks kinda boring as it is now (and also a bit too big for this new RL model).

I agree. It looks WAY to long and slim. And I think that is the main reason its not in Nexuiz (and why I hate it). If you compare 2.3 RL and this RL you can clearly see the difference.

  • I don't really like the look of either, although I use the new one because of the lower profile. The old one is the right size, but it is just ugly- the back of it bulges out in a perverse way, and the shape/cartoony texture map is altogether not befitting of a bringer of explosive death.

May I suggest that a revised design, if anyone ever ventures to create one, should strive to avoid the "long tube with doodads" look. That kind of thing resembles today's RPGs, which are NOT held in the same stance as a rifle or flamethrower- they are over the shoulder weapons.

  • It'd be cooler if it were shoulder-mounted, I think. It makes it seem more powerful, and makes it distinct/ original.

Also the hands not relating to the model doesn't matter, especially if you keep the hands fairly generic looking.

  • I dunno, I think it would look okay shoulder mounted with the current fire rate, it'd be fun. Somehow I just think it would make it look bigger, meatier, and more powerful.

So what, is that like a limitation of the Darkplaces engine? You can't have weapons in the upper half of the screen? Any way to change that somehow? Maybe contact Darkplaces' creators?

Most game have the weapons in the lower half of the screen (hud). I personally wouldn't want it in the upper right or left hand corner. But to give you an example, a new game Team Fortress 2 has a RL mounted on the shoulder of the player model, but in first person view you still see it in the lower right hand corner.

DP already allows for different weapon placement on the models if that's all you want.

  • Gotcha. I still reckon it might look okay in the top half of the screen or at least higher up than say the Half-Life one.

For example the rocket launcher in Halo 2 isn't shoulder mounted (although it might be come to think of it), but it uses quite a lot of the screen and looks cool..

The halo RL is basically overpowered and the model is meant to reflect that. You aren't meant to be running around with it for an extended period of time so the fact that it obscures 20% of the screen isn't a problem. Nexuiz is, of course, different.

  • Good point, I totally see what you mean.

That said, it still looks really cool. Something that was kind of half-way between that and the Half-Life RPG would be good.

Actually this one from AVP2 looks quite good, although again it uses too much of the screen:

    Image

It'd be good to have something like that but maybe pulled a bit further back or a bit smaller or something.

BTW It'd also be nice to have a cool trail on the rockets. On this old game called syndicate, you got a really nice trail, that was basically a load of puffs of smoke coming out of the rocket as it fired. It looked really powerful. You can see it firing in the screenshot in the middle of the 9 Amiga ones here:

    http://syndicate.lubie.org/synd/gallery ... _amiga.php

There's also a really low framerate video (3 seconds long) at the bottom of the following page that kind of shows it in action, though it looked better in the game.
