How does one access the console in Quake3?

  • I'm trying to take a first look at my map through Quake 3 - because that's where my map and textures are - but I need to bring down the console to do this. Hitting the tilde key is supposedly how one does this, but it doesn't work. I've hit pretty much all the keys on my keyboard now, and none of them bring down the console. The same goes for Nexuiz, for that matter.

    I am using a Norwegian keyboard. I have managed to bring down the console in Q3 before, so I know it can be donne, but I don't remember how. Please help. 8)

    Thanks. Now I know how to get into the console inn Nex. 8)

    And after some more frustrated random keypounding I figured out how to access the console in Q3 too: it's F13. So I'm ok now. 8) Thanks.

  • F13? Now THAT is weird... :P
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

    You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Such stuff is always a bit complicated if you use NON-us layouts. In linux i use such a shellscript for playing:
    Code: Select all
    #!/bin/sh

    setxkbmap -symbols "pc(pc105)+us"
    "$@"
    exitcode="$?"
    setxkbmap -symbols "pc(pc105)+us(intl)+group(alts_toggle)"
    #xgamma -gamma 1
    exit "$exitcode"

    use it like: cd /path/to/Nexuiz; game ./nexuiz-linux-sdl.sh
    It switches the keyboard to us layout, starts the script arguments and then switches back to my normal layout. If you remove that # it even resets gamma in case the game crashed.

  • or simply open the make a file autoexec.cfg in any base dir in any quake1-2-3 engine based game, and put this line into it:

    Code: Select all
    bind key "toggleconsole"
    "One should strive to achieve; not sit in bitter regret."

  • SHIFT+TILDE is standard, isn't it?
    In JKA it is, which uses q3 engine
