How does one make a dome?

  • As the topic says; How does one make domes? I've found tutorials on making arches - and they're easy. But domes? Can it be done?

    And on a side note: When presenting new versions of a map, does one start a new topic or does one edit the original post of the thread where the map was first introduced? I have the impression that people don't notice when I edit an OP, while starting a new thread never fails to bring replies and helpful hints. But that can result in an awful lot of new threads... ;p

    (of course I want my maps to get attention... ;))

  • There is a sphere primitive, but I dont find it very useful. The best way to make a dome, is to make a bevel patch, and then from the top view, move the vertexes so that it is domed. It is extremely hard to explain it with words, so Ill make you a little picture tutorial when I get home tonight.

    I didn't know about the sphere primitive. Tried it just now, and it almost does what I want it to do:

    1: Sphere - input number of sides.
    2: Hollow the resulting sphere.
    3: Chop off the unwanted half.

    But this only seems to work if you want a perfectly spherical dome. It won't be contrained by a cubic bounding box, and if you try flattening it's shape afterwards, then all sorts of wierdness happens (I might want to use that effect in another map though - the result was kinda cool).

    I'd be grateful for a tutorial, if it doesn't take too much work to do. (OTOH there might be other mappers who would want a dome tutorial, so it's not just for me. ;))

    Did some more experimenting; Instead of chopping the sphere off halfways like I said above, I chopped off most of the sphere. This left me with the bowl-shape I wanted. So far so good. However, it turned out that:

    1: It requred a ridiculously large number of brushes (120) stacked in a very inefficient way.
    2: There was a lot of z-fighting along the edges due to the inefficient stacking.

  • Quick'n dirty tutorial:

    1. Create a brush
    2. Curve -> Cylinder
    3. Curve -> Cap Selection (Ctrl + C) (puts Caps on the Cylinder)
    4. Delete the Cylinder and one Cap
    5. press V to edit the Vertices of the Cap. Grab the one in the middle and pull it up or down.

    This doesn't result in a perfect Half-Sphere but maybe it's enough for your purposes.

    That is good enough for my purposes. Thanks. I can now make the domes I want. 8)
