  • That looks nice, although maybe it would be better if it were a sprite, so it just always faces you with 1 plane, instead of 2 intersecting ones.

  • yeah, either a sprite or real particles which would let it look really cool.

  • The flames in Doom 3 look really cool.

BTW an old game that used flames was Space Hulk, it looked pretty good. Here's a picture featuring some flames in it. Obviously it'd be better to see a video but I couldn't find one.

    Image

hehe the blood looked good too:

Also look at this video of Syndicate Wars. Around the two minute 05 mark, a guy in black is walking around on fire, then collapses, and you see the flames melt him leaving only a skeleton. If this kind of thing happened in Nexuiz it would be really nice.

  • Too bad it is MORE watchable in "Youtube quality"... :P
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • divVerent, there needs to be more texture aliasing in that video! It's almost watchable as is otherwise.

    gl_texturemode GL_NEAREST

Should fix that niggle nicely. ;-)

  • Very impressive... kind of looks like it could work for a menu concept I had in my head a while back, where when creating a game you'd start with a menu with vertically-aligned icons for each game type, then when you chose that it'd swipe over to the side and open a new menu for choosing the map, then it'd swipe over from there for other game settings.

But I think the biggest question is... how has scrolling been improved? :)

  • Nothing has "improved". This is entirely new and starting from scratch - but written in menu QC. And yes, there will be better scrolling... but so far, there are no scrollbar controls, no list boxes yet, etc.

    It will take some time.

I try to get all transitions smooth (even togglemenu is!), let's see how well that works out. Also, I already know that I won't include all the cvars the current menu has. My goal is to make it simpler, and much faster than the current menu.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

I don't think anybody else knows how to program in it.

I tried hacking up the menu, and man is it hard! maybe it's because I'm so used to HTML, but I can't seem to work with the markup very easily. :?

I'd say it's very unlikely that a new menu will still use that weird scripting system, so don't bother...

  • I am not using that, by the way, but instead making my own system. And it will use QC only, it won't parse a menu definition at runtime. I don't want that overhead.

  • Ohhh woooow.

That is such a massive improvement...

So that low FPS - is that because of the menu altering performance or just a result of video capturing?

  • probably video capturing. That does look pretty cool though. I never liked how the UI on the menus had a weird behavior... the scrollbars aren't really scrollbars and all...

  • Yes, video capturing. And yes, I'll try to make the control as "normal" as possible. For example, buttons and sliders already implement common UI semantics (like on Windows, KDE, GNOME): if you click a button and pull the mouse cursor out, the button will NOT be activated - it only will when the mouse is above the button when releasing. A slider will also restore its previous value when you leave it while dragging. List boxes do not exist yet, but I'll also try to make their slider as "normal" as possible.
