  • Hi everyone!
I made this map mainly to test out some cool stuff you can do with q3 fake-portal skies.
So watch out for lightning, meteors and vortexes ;)
The map was built in the style of evilspace.
Also a big thanks to Rad Ished for the hemisphere that i used in this map (yeah, it's rotating 8))

    All feedback is highly appreciated.

    Known bugs/ things to fix:
    - no waypoints for the bots
    - the lightning in the sky will be less fps-consuming (now it's on patches. brushes would decrease the tris-count a lot. Have to test this for how it looks though)

  • Holy hell that looks wild! :P cant w8 to try it!

EDIT: Tried it, and tho it looks very nice indeed the render speed is abysmal here :| ~8 fps @ normal.cfg without bots or other playres both with 2.3 std engine and a fairly svn one. ( 6600gt, 2ghz dualcode, a gig ram. )
EDIT2: Reducing the HUUUUGE hemi.jpg (~45 megs of texture mem right there : ) to 1024x1024 =) and some other, making sure they are power of two etc made my framerate jump from 8 to 90. So i guess it was a memory use issue for me.

    HOF:
<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along
    <Samua>]Idea: Fix it? :D

  • Oh, cool stuff I see there.

    Thanks alot!

edit: Runs actually very good here, 120-300 fps (Athlon X2 5200+, Radeon HD 3850). Just a texture on those planetary support beams seems to be missing.

  • Yep, you need Dynamic lights enabled (not the realtime world lights)
Oh, and looks great and fun :D

  • Problem solved by turning on effects.

In terms of the map itself, I think that there is way too much health/armor. The sky effects are really neat, although the terrain on the planet and those lightning towers themselves are really ugly. I look forward to testing out the gameplay though!

yep, that hemi texture is really huge ;)
I haven't modified it so far, but i'll also try it with 1024². I hope it doesn't look washed out then.

@SavageX: thanks for pointing out the texture-issue. I always forget to include some textures the first time i build a pk3.... ALWAYS..... argl

@torus: You're right, the "moon"-terrain-thingie is totally ugly. To work on the lightning towers is also a total "Gefrickel", but i'll put more work in it
"Gefrickel" typically is small scale, tedious work you need three hands for, which tends to go wrong at 1001 places and kills your nerves

About the gameplay: At the moment there are 3 armors, that's definitely too much, but when i checked out the svn build i saw q3-like medium armors (only 50+ iirc), and so there should be 2 medium and one full armor with 2.4. Have to try it today.

And of course you're all welcome to use and modify the skybox for your purposes.

Btw.: What do you think about the meteors ? Should i keep them ? I don't know because they look kinda flat in some situations. And they're not animated which looks dull when they're near the level. Maybe go with more faster smaller comets ?

  • Personally I consider comets to be slow moving objects with a long trail and the current thingies don't really fit that description.

Having some really fast moving falling stars (Sternschnuppen) may make sense, though. Those would essentially be bright very elongated spots.

  • When the FOV is set to '130' you get these funny things in the top corners
    Image

WTF? I don't understand what I'm looking at here
    Image

The textures don't align properly, it's a little distracting
    Image

Otherwise, I love the map, nice flow, some fun creative jumps. I can see a lot of good times on spacecross :D

  • @SavageX: good idea. I'll give it a try !

@ [z]: hmm. those weird corners you get there on the first shot... i believe these are some artifacts cuased by the "fake portal sky q3map2 hack thingie". No idea how to fix this :(
On your second shot one can see parts of the miniature of the skybox (which has to be somewhere inside the level to work). I'll try to avoid this somehow.
    3rd shot will get fixed.
    Thanks for the feedback :D

  • I don't know why, but today this map come back into my mind. Since last time I tested it, I updated the drivers of my gfx card and Nexuiz 2.4 was released.

My first impression was that it's really awesome and impressive what you have done with the sky and the effects. Since I like spacefloaters, the gameplay is fine for me, nice for quick dm action like evilspace.

About performance, it's also positive, it's run fine on my 4 years old laptop, and with textures compressions in 2.4, the huge textures don't block my systems.

Except the few problems like the miniature of the skybox, the map is already fully playable and shouldn't be forgotten. Great work so far :D

  • wow, this map looks fantastic and shows what Strahle's heart is beating (yes, it's the minstagib mode! :D ). I think I'll love it more than evilspace.

The vortex' limb looks a little crappy on my settings (and on ultimate settings with HDR).

I get approximately 500fps on default settings and around 130 on ultimate + HDR (C2D 6750/Geforce 9600GT/2G RAM)

Could you please make us a video in high resolution in those über graphical settings?

  • meh. this is still a beta. The moon looks like crap, some textures aren't lined up correctly, those lightning conductors look weird. I may find some time to finish this during the next month. And it'll hopefully look better.
    And those comets... bah

Yer wish - my command. However, I'm not that sensational graphics settings tweakz0r, so don't expect any wonders 8)
