  • Seeing that we've been gaining some modelers in the past few days and that there isn't another thread like this, I thought it would be a nice idea to brainstorm for ideas. I myself have no idea how to model, but I'm trying to learn (thank the lord for wikibooks :D ). So if you have no idea how to model you can still play a role in the modeling process!
    Go ahead and brainstorm already!!!

  • I'd just like to see remakes of the current character concepts with better detail.

  • I think a collection of .jpgs of the current Nexuiz models would be useful. I might do it myself if nobody else already has this. It's hard to have a good look at the skins when playing, I know i could import them all to blender but i want to see them in the game.
This could also be useful with all the new skins coming out, maybe somebody could host it as the Nexuiz Player Model Gallery. Div?
Although tbh I'm not the best candidate to do this cos my mac is a wiener (small)

  • take a look at http://ouns.wikispaces.com/models

you can upload any file that's under 10 MB. (mass upload possible)

PS: i'm a bit confused on the default model sources. i want to provide seperate download links like on the custom models. if anyone could explain it that would be wonderful. or should i just upload the whole model source pack?

  • Yeah, remakes of Marine, Lurk, Grunt, Quark, and Heroine are seriously needed.
    Some of my ideas included...
1)A rabid otter guy (to go with my name)
2)A more anonymous marine with helmet (it would help it seem more like an arena and less like a clone battle)
3)A Grunt without camo pants (it just looks wrong)
4)And a Heroine that doesn't look like a guy! :P (maybe a more feminine shape)
One last suggestion would be to get rid of the reptile skin (It looks like a downgraded Lurk)

  • I like the idea of the JPEGs. The previews in the player model selection looked bad. However I only play Ubuntu stable at the moment not svn.

A propos, in war§ow the model selection/coloration is a rotating realtime 3D animation. Should I write a feature request for something like this in nexuiz? It looks nice.

When it comes to brain storming, my brain is full of storm:
What about a biped insect or maybe something with more than two legs or arms?
What i really liked to see is a slightly humanoid shaped liquid or jelly thingy with a smooth, sleek and slim overall outline consisting only of curves ... no peaks points and no sharp edges.

I would do it myself, but I'm so clumsy in 3D modelling. I tried several times, even with tutorials, but never got something useful. I gave up. Maybe I just had to buy proper equipment. Dunno. I always wonder how people can do that. That will probably always be high wizardry for me.

  • Hey, what about a plain skeleton?
... or something in a cloak, being completely hidden, only 2 glowing eye sockets under a big dark hood and the gun sticking out of the opening of wide probably hollow sleeves. Muahaha! That would be so cool and scary, I bet you all want to play that.

The skeleton idea was in Quake3... It was very odd... ok ok, a walking skeleton, but where do the gibs come from?! :D

About the other stuff... could be a custom player model, but not in stock nexuiz imho (they just don't fit).

What I'd like to see a grunt, similar to quake2 soldiers. Morpehd tried to port the original quake2 models, but the UV map went wrong :(

You got a point there... but wait, a level 20 wizard could teleport behind it when it dies and magic the gibs out of thin air ;)

  • I like the insect idea, but the skeleton just wouldn't fit the Nexuiz style at all.
No matter how much Industrial armor you put on it, it just wouldn't work. As for the blob, I'm not sure how it could possibly hold the gun! wouldn't it just go right through its hands?
Anyhow I think I might whip up some concept art for some of my ideas (truthfully I'm a horrible artist). After thinking about it the "armored otter" idea could work. Maybe a possible skin over the Carni model with an animated tail?
    I don't know, it's a work in progress...

I thought it would be like Odo from Star Trek while changing or the evil Terminator 2000 during transformation. Or maybe just your friendly neighbourhood slime monster, like that Ghostbusters Slimer but more humanoid, with feet and a head.

Hmmm, interesting... something like that could work  !

  • What about some very pale vampire-like characters? I mean, we got a lycanthrope already.
    Something similar to this:
    Image
I also like the armor of those guys. Maybe some more armored models? Seems pretty strange for somebody entering the arena with no armor (those alien-guys & the female model)

  • The armor looks a bit like this Warhammer stuff.

However armor usually has drawbacks (weight, restrited movement, smaller sight, cost). It hasn't got these drawbacks in Nexuiz, but in Real Life (tm).

You know the armor of the bomb squad guys: http://images.google.com/images?q=bomb+ ... ch&start=0
I can absolutely understand why regular policemen and soldiers all over the world wear smaller armor. I don't think they could do their work wearing bomb squad armor.

Knights usually had huge problems getting on their horses... that kinda says it all.
When you're in company of a heavy armored knight and an hungry dragon is after you, just remember: You do not have to outrun the dragon...

Exactly. That's why it's no big deal in my opinion.
Nexuiz is no simulation anyway. I just wanna have nice-looking enemies. :P
I don't expect the same polycount as UT2004. Not even UT99. It's Quake and I know that. I wouldn't play this game, if I used to be one of those graphics-fetish Crysis-Freaks. But I think, that some armored guys would fit into the roster. Or the pale freaks. Maybe both.
    Anyway, just another opinion.

  • So, why you wanna stick the good lookin girls in big armor suits? Oh wait, I got it. It's one of these mystic fetish thingies, which I don't understand, right? ;)

  • I like girls in armor suits, okay? :P In my opinion an arena-style game needs to have armors, cuz I don't wanna shoot a heavy grunt first and the next moment a bikini-wearing girl.
Not the case here, but you get the point. That's one of the reasons why I don't like OpenArena. It just doesn't fit the style.
Gives me an odd feeling to gib a nude girl.

  • IMHO a game should offer both. Well, they SHOULD wear more than just a bikini... what about some with "normal" clothes, and some with armor? Then we'd have something for everyone.

Bikini girls in a FPS are just silly, I agree - but silly isn't necessarily bad. OA's problem is that it doesn't provide anything ELSE :P
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

You never been to "{}CTF+Ex Over the Lazy Dog {X}" when some people in a funny mood were there, too... They have some female models with tiny clothes there (Abyss Angelyss, Dark, ...), but I think they have too big ... guns ...

Dunno if other servers have these, too... But I hope so :)

  • I think I saw these once. White & purple wings?
Wouldn't like to see this kind as default in Nex.
Custom models, okay. But we're talking about the standard ones, right?
And if every player would use a model with that polycount there'd be a huge lag problem imo

Yeah, and I think one of them has horns... and there's this furry cat-girl model, too.
    I like them.
It adds diversification an individualism to the games look. Every model does. That's why I like this thread. If somone likes to make models and runs out of ideas, here's a special related supply.

  • I made those at work today.

At first I have to say, that I don't like the Lurker(?) character the way it is at the moment. The arms & legs are too thin imo. The head is too small. I want him heavier in general. Like the Lizard Man from Soul Calibur 1.
    Image

This one is kind of a nex-styled UT99-Xan-Clone. Gundam-style "wings" at his back.
    Image

A female character WITH (light) armor. Maybe a cop. I had Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell in my mind.
    Image

In my opinion the walking eye in Quake3 was the most original model ever made. And I had that idea of a headless robot. Why not combine those two? (I know, it looks similar to the robots from StarWars Episode2+3)
    Image

And here's a Nali... Strogg... Cyborg... thing...
    Image
Yes, his original arms are at the back. He can fight only with his implants. I kinda like this idea.

These are "concept" sketches only. I cannot do these in 3D, cause I'm not into that stuff. But if somebody is inspired to make one... Go ahead. :P
